Job description
About the opportunity
Boliden Tara Mines is looking for someone to join its Electrical & Instrumentation Apprenticeship programme in Navan, County Meath. This is a structured path for people who want to build a long-term technical career while earning and learning at the same time.
The company is driven by the values of Care, Courage and Responsibility, and its broader aim is to be recognised as the world’s most climate-friendly and respected metals provider. The role suits candidates who enjoy technology, problem solving, and understanding how complex systems operate.
Programme overview
This is a 4-year paid apprenticeship that combines practical work on site with off-site training. On completion, apprentices achieve a QQI Advanced Certificate, Level 6, which is a nationally recognised qualification respected across many sectors.
Along the way, you will receive technical learning, hands-on experience, and support from qualified craft professionals. The programme is designed to help you grow your skills in a safe, inclusive, and development-focused environment.
What you will do
- Fit, test, and calibrate instrumentation and control devices.
- Work with sensors, transmitters, automation systems, and related technologies.
- Diagnose faults and support resolution of technical issues.
- Use digital tools and modern control solutions as part of daily work.
- Follow Boliden safety standards, contribute to risk assessments, and take part in safety improvement work.
- Maintain clear maintenance documentation and help keep the workplace organised through housekeeping and 5S practices.
- Join daily team briefings, contribute ideas, and support improvements in safety, sustainability, and efficiency.
The competencies developed in this apprenticeship are transferable to industries such as mining, pharmaceuticals, food production, and manufacturing.
Training and support
Boliden Tara Mines provides strong technical training, competitive pay, and good rewards as your experience grows. Apprentices are supported by experienced craftspeople who coach, build confidence, and encourage learning through questions and curiosity.
The workplace is described as safety-focused, welcoming, and inclusive, with a strong emphasis on helping apprentices feel respected and able to learn well.
Entry requirements
- You must be 18 years of age or older.
- You need a Leaving Certificate with at least five Ordinary Level passes, including English and Maths.
What the company is looking for
- A genuine curiosity about how things work.
- Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
- A willingness to learn and ask questions.
- A positive, proactive attitude.
- Interest in technology, engineering, or problem solving.
Working pattern
- The role involves 39 hours per week, Monday to Friday.
- Some flexibility is required depending on operational needs.
- The apprenticeship combines workplace learning with external training in a structured format.
Career growth and inclusion
This apprenticeship is intended as the start of a wider career, not just a qualification. Successful apprentices may go on to develop their careers within the site and across the wider Boliden Group, where their skills can be valuable both nationally and internationally.
Boliden Tara Mines says it is committed to an environment where women and men feel equally welcome, supported, and able to succeed. Applications are encouraged from people of all backgrounds, including those who may not have previously considered a career in Electrical & Instrumentation.
Additional information
If you are interested but unsure whether you meet every requirement, you are still encouraged to apply. The closing date for applications is 19 June 2026.
Current Boliden employees should not apply through this route; they are asked to use their Workday account and submit an application through the internal jobs area.
