Job description

Role overview

Lancashire County Council is recruiting four Elective Home Education Support Workers to join its Inclusion Service. The post sits within the Specialist Teaching Service alongside the Alternative Provision Team, supporting early intervention work that helps children and young people remain included in education.

This is a permanent, full-time role for 37 hours per week. It is county-wide and primarily home-based, with travel across Lancashire as needed. The position is graded at 7 and offers a salary of £32,061 to £36,363 per year. The role includes 4 vacancies.

Team context

The Elective Home Education team currently includes one lead, five support workers and one teacher (5.4 FTE). The team works to make sure suitable education is arranged and to support families who educate their children at home.

What the role involves

You will act as a key contact for families who have chosen home education and help ensure children and young people receive appropriate provision. The work combines case management, advice, partnership working and direct engagement with families, schools and other services.

  • Support home-educated children, young people and their families as the primary point of contact.
  • Manage a substantial caseload and provide practical guidance around Elective Home Education.
  • Carry out administrative duties linked to case management, including updating ICT systems for recording and reporting.
  • Help parents and carers understand EHE duties, procedures and expectations.
  • Visit homes when needed to assess the education being provided.
  • Take part in multi-agency meetings and help shape wider support plans for children and young people.
  • Work in a hybrid way, with most time spent working from home while supporting families across Lancashire.
  • Assess referrals into the service and check that suitable education arrangements are in place.
  • Understand how admissions and Children Missing Education processes connect with the EHE service.
  • Build knowledge of EHE law and statutory responsibilities across Lancashire County Council services, schools and partner organisations.
  • Visit schools proactively to promote inclusion and advise on reasonable adjustments for pupils who remain on roll.
  • Use knowledge of other agencies, such as Children’s Social Care, SEND services, Youth Offending Teams and CAMHS, to direct families to the right support.
  • Use information technology effectively in day-to-day work.

What the council is looking for

Applicants should be motivated, enthusiastic and committed to improving outcomes for children and young people. The role requires someone who can balance priorities, work confidently with education processes and understand the legal framework around elective home education.

  • Strong understanding of education.
  • Clear knowledge of Elective Home Education legislation and statutory guidance.
  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively.
  • Commitment to securing the best possible outcomes for children and young people.

What is offered

The council offers the chance to join a supportive, professional team focused on improving standards for children and young people with SEND. You will be supported by experienced colleagues and have access to professional development as the service grows.

  • Friendly and professional team environment.
  • Experienced staff to support your development in settings and schools.
  • Professional development opportunities aligned with service needs.

Additional requirements

This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975, as amended in 2013. If you are successful, you will need to apply for a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. More information is available through the recruitment process information provided by the employer.

You must have access to a car for work purposes and the vehicle must be insured for business use. Consideration may be given if you are unable to drive because of a disability.

Closing date: 5pm Sunday 14th June 2026.

Proposed interview date: w/c 29th June 2026.
