Education Programs Specialist

About the Role

The Marine Mammal Center in Kailua-Kona, Hawai'i seeks a full-time Education Programs Specialist to lead marine science education initiatives. Reporting to the Director of Ke Kai Ola, this position involves delivering educational content for diverse groups from 4th graders to adults, using effective instructional techniques in a safe and inclusive environment. The role requires regular onsite presence with a typical workweek from Monday to Friday, 8 hours daily, but flexibility for evenings, weekends, and holidays is needed. Some local travel is part of the job duties.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and deliver engaging marine science education sessions tailored to various age groups using evidence-based teaching strategies.
• Coordinate logistics, prepare materials, set up learning environments, maintain participant records, and document program data accurately.
• Maintain an inclusive, safe, and welcoming atmosphere for all participants, including students, educators, volunteers, and staff.
• Foster strong collaborative relationships both within the organization and with external partners such as schools and community groups.
• Address program inquiries promptly and professionally, escalating concerns when necessary, and adhere to all safety and emergency protocols.
• Document and report incidents or program-related issues to management.
• Lead and assist with community engagement activities including youth visits, presentations, and events that promote the organization's mission and impact.
• Serve as an ambassador at community and outreach events representing the Center professionally.
• Assist in planning and executing onsite tours, special events, and donor-related activities.
• Identify educational program gaps and collaborate on curriculum enhancements leveraging current environmental information and audience needs.
• Incorporate innovative teaching approaches and technology to improve educational outcomes.
• Implement program monitoring and evaluation techniques to assess success and impact.
• Contribute content and data to assist with grant proposals, reports, and donor communications.
• Support other assigned areas within Ke Kai Ola and undertake special projects or research as needed.

Required Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in education, natural sciences, or a related discipline.
• Minimum of three years experience working with school groups, curriculum design, and leading educational tours, preferably with environmental education or related backgrounds.
• Eligibility to clear U.S. Department of Justice fingerprinting for work with students.
• Valid driver’s license and motor vehicle record meeting insurability standards; must be 21 years or older due to frequent driving requirements.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

• Combination of indoor office and hospital environments plus outdoor facilities accessed via various terrains.
• Desk-based computer work with repetitive motions and focus in open cubicle settings with possible distractions.
• Exposure to outdoor weather conditions year-round, including walking up to 5+ miles per shift and navigating beaches and uneven terrain.
• Physical demands include prolonged standing, walking, crouching, stair climbing, manual dexterity, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
• Work involving interaction with live animals presents risks such as bites, scratches, allergen exposure, and strong odors related to animal care.
• Must be able to drive and operate equipment safely for extended periods.
