Role Overview
This is a remote contract opportunity for a journalist based in New Zealand. The engagement is flexible, with an expected commitment of 10 to 40 hours each week.
What You’ll Do
- Identify story ideas, shape pitches, and turn them into original news pieces, features, and long-form articles.
- Carry out interviews, collect direct insights, and confirm information against reliable and authoritative references.
- Write content that is precise, engaging, and easy to understand for different reader groups.
- Review and refine articles so they meet quality, consistency, and editorial requirements.
- Work with editors, designers, and fellow reporters to improve the overall standard of the content.
- Track breaking news, emerging trends, and other developments connected to the assigned coverage area.
What We’re Looking For
- Prior professional experience in journalism, supported by a strong collection of published work.
- Excellent written and spoken communication skills, along with a careful eye for detail.
- Strong interview skills and the ability to distill complex information into clear reporting.
- Capacity to work on your own, stay organized, and deliver work within short deadlines in a remote environment.
- A naturally curious mindset, strong initiative, and solid analytical thinking.
- Good knowledge of media law, journalistic ethics, and standard newsroom practices.
