Blue Crystal Literary Magazine is an international literary home for storytelling, poetry, and visual art that aims to provoke thought, spark imagination, and leave a lasting emotional impact. Founded on September 22, 2022, it has featured writing and creative work from over 200 contributors representing 50+ countries. The magazine values originality, depth, and authenticity, and it actively fosters an inclusive community for both new and experienced creators. In addition to its regular issues, it also runs anthologies, competitions, and collaborative projects that bring writers and artists together with an engaged audience.
Role Overview
This part-time, remote Editor position is centered on selecting, shaping, and polishing submissions for publication. The editor will assess poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and hybrid pieces that combine text and visuals, then determine their quality, originality, and fit with the magazine’s themes. The role also includes giving thoughtful editorial notes, helping plan issues, and contributing to the ordering and presentation of selected work so the magazine maintains a consistent voice and standard.
Key Duties
- Review incoming submissions across poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and visual-text formats.
- Judge submissions on craft, originality, and alignment with the publication’s editorial direction.
- Share clear, respectful, and actionable feedback with writers.
- Work with the editorial team on issue planning, content selection, and sequencing.
- Support a steady editorial tone and quality across published pieces.
- Carry out light copyediting and fact-checking when needed.
- Draft short introductions or contributor notes for selected works.
- Assist with special initiatives such as anthologies and contests.
- Manage tasks independently in a remote, asynchronous workflow and respond reliably within deadlines.
Qualifications
Applicants should bring strong editorial judgment and an informed literary sensibility, with experience evaluating and refining poetry, fiction, and/or creative non-fiction. Excellent written English is important, including strong grammar, style awareness, proofreading, and copyediting ability. Familiarity with modern literary journals, publishing trends, and a range of voices and styles is also expected. The ideal candidate can communicate editorial decisions professionally, offer constructive criticism with care, and stay organized while handling multiple submissions and deadlines in a part-time environment. Comfort using remote collaboration and submission tools such as Submittable or similar platforms, shared documents, email, and chat is required. Experience with a literary magazine, press, or comparable creative publication is preferred, though not mandatory. A bachelor’s degree in English, Creative Writing, Literature, Communications, or equivalent relevant experience is welcome. The magazine also values candidates who are committed to inclusivity and supporting emerging as well as underrepresented voices.
Additional Information
This is a part-time remote position based in the United Kingdom. No stipend or salary amount was specified. The role is designed for someone who is comfortable working independently and maintaining dependable communication in an online editorial setting.
