Job description
About the Role
The Economist Service is a leading career track for economists in Singapore’s public sector. It is built to develop a strong pool of professional economists who can deepen economic analysis across government and support better public policy decisions.
Economists in this service work across different ministries and agencies, including Trade and Industry, Finance, Manpower, Social and Family Development, Health, and Sustainability and the Environment. By moving across these postings, they contribute economic expertise to a broad spectrum of policy areas such as economic strategy, fiscal policy, social policy, health, security, and infrastructure.
What You Will Do
You will join a team of economists using econometrics, data science, and artificial intelligence to work with large and novel datasets on policy-relevant questions. Your projects will focus on areas like trade and internationalisation, labour markets, and digitalisation, with the aim of generating data-backed insights that improve policy design and outcomes.
You will also support the Ministry’s economic surveillance work by using real-time and high-frequency data, along with predictive models, to strengthen monitoring capabilities. In addition, you will apply text analytics to detect emerging themes from media sources for further study by the Economics Division.
To share findings effectively with stakeholders, you will need to present insights in clear, accessible, and visual formats such as dashboards.
Requirements
The ideal candidate should hold a Degree, Master’s, or PhD in Economics or another quantitative field such as Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Data Analytics, Engineering, or a related discipline.
You should have a strong interest in empirical research and solid experience solving complex problems through quantitative methods.
Applicants should bring strong analytical capabilities in areas such as econometrics and data science, especially for forecasting, policy modelling, simulations, and impact evaluation.
Experience handling large, real-time datasets is expected.
You must also be able to explain complex ideas clearly and logically, with strong written and verbal communication skills.
Hands-on proficiency with statistical and programming tools such as STATA, R, and Python, as well as visualisation tools like Tableau, is important.
Additional Information
Applicants are asked to submit the latest educational certificate and transcripts from A Levels or Diploma onwards, including any unofficial transcripts if available, to support application processing. If you have completed any Economics coursework projects or a thesis, you should include those materials for reference as well.
