Job description

Role overview

The Economist Service is the Singapore public sector’s flagship pathway for economists. It brings together a dedicated pool of professional economists to strengthen economic analysis and, in turn, support better public policy decisions.

Economists in this service work across multiple ministries and agencies, including the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Manpower, Ministry of Social and Family Development, Ministry of Health, and Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment. In these postings, they help shape a broad range of policies spanning economic, fiscal, social, health, security, and infrastructure matters.

This position is based in the Ministry of Trade and Industry and sits within the Economist Service. As a public sector economist, you will apply economics frameworks, conduct rigorous research, and use data-led methods to build evidence that informs policy design and implementation in Singapore.

What you will do

  • Track developments in Singapore and the global economy, and assess how external shifts affect the domestic economy, including issues such as supply chain reconfiguration.
  • Carry out economic studies on topics relevant to public policy, such as the effects of government schemes and measures on firms and individuals.
  • Support the development and execution of public policies, including evaluating the impact of initiatives such as tourism projects.
  • Begin your career in the Economics Division of the Ministry of Trade and Industry, where you will work on subjects such as growth, inflation, business costs, trade, industrial strategy, corporate capabilities, labour market issues, and productivity and innovation.
  • Build capabilities in data science-related research and analytical work as part of your development.

Candidate profile

The role is suited to applicants with a strong interest in empirical work and the ability to solve difficult problems using quantitative methods. You should also be able to communicate complex ideas clearly and logically.

Application documents

To support your application, include your most recent educational certificate and academic transcripts from A Levels or diploma level onward, along with any unofficial transcripts if available. If you have completed Economics coursework projects or a thesis, you should also submit a copy for reference.
