Job description

Role overview

JDS Group of Companies is seeking an Earthworks Supervisor to direct and coordinate heavy civil and earthworks field operations on mining and infrastructure projects in Nunavut, Canada. This position is focused on managing grading, excavation, haulage, site preparation, and road-building activities while keeping work safe, productive, and aligned with project needs and site conditions.

Field supervision and crew coordination

  • Guide crews and equipment operators through excavation, grading, compaction, haulage, and site-preparation tasks.
  • Set daily priorities, give clear site direction, and make sure labour and equipment are used effectively.
  • Help coach and develop operators so performance and safety expectations remain consistent.

Contractor and crew management

  • Monitor subcontracted teams to ensure productivity, safe practices, and quality standards are met.
  • Confirm that work stays within the defined scope, timeline, and project expectations.
  • Work closely with field staff, survey personnel, and project teams to keep operations aligned.

Operations and productivity

  • Record daily production, quantities, and progress compared with targets.
  • Support planning, sequencing, and execution of earthworks activities.
  • Carry out or assist with minor mechanical tasks and preventive maintenance to help minimize downtime.

Safety and compliance

  • Encourage and uphold a strong safety-first culture across all crews.
  • Lead toolbox meetings, FLHAs, and other site safety activities.
  • Ensure compliance with site safety rules, environmental obligations, and operating procedures.

Quality and environmental standards

  • Verify that work meets project specifications and site expectations.
  • Support inspections, material placement, and compaction requirements.
  • Apply good environmental practices for soil management, drainage, and site conditions.

Equipment and logistics

  • Coordinate day-to-day use of heavy equipment such as dozers, excavators, graders, and haul units.
  • Watch equipment condition and assist with maintenance planning.
  • Help manage logistics in remote or difficult operating environments.
