Job Overview

The State of Tennessee seeks a full-time Driver's License Examiner based in Paris, TN, working for the Department of Safety and Homeland Security, Henry County. This role involves evaluating applicants' eligibility for driver's license services such as renewals, replacements, testing, and handgun permits. The examiner administers vision, written, and road tests, collects fees, and manages applicant data entry.

Responsibilities

  • Provide clear explanations of state laws, licensing requirements, and departmental regulations regarding driver's licenses, answering public inquiries about office hours, locations, fees, and application procedures.
  • Collect and verify fees and identification documents, access applicant files, and approve appropriate testing steps.
  • Manage cash registers by counting, recording cash-on-hand, printing daily receipt reports, reconciling revenues with financial reports, and preparing bank deposits.
  • Guide applicants through form completion and test procedures; conduct vision screenings, written, and road skills tests per Tennessee guidelines; photograph applicants using digital cameras; communicate test outcomes and retake requirements; and log results in the database.
  • Perform motor vehicle safety inspections and assess applicants’ ability to safely operate a vehicle and follow traffic regulations during road tests.
  • Update licensing records and enter biographical data accurately into the License Information System for Tennessee (LIST), verifying information with applicants.
  • Handle special projects, respond to customer questions, process immigration-related cases, accommodate applicants needing assistance, and assist with audits, reporting, and inventory management.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Complete a thorough background clearance including fingerprint- and name-based criminal history checks.
  • No convictions or insanity verdicts for permanent disqualifying federal offenses as per CFR Title 49 Section 1572.103(a).
  • No convictions or similar findings for interim disqualifying offenses within the 7 years prior to application as per CFR Title 49 Section 1572.103(b).
  • No incarceration release within 5 years prior to application related to interim disqualifying offenses.
  • No outstanding warrants for felony disqualifying offenses.
  • Must hold or be able to obtain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license before appointment.
  • Meet state driver standards with a clean driving record in the past 5 years, free from DUI, reckless driving, license suspensions for moving violations, or more than four moving violations.
