Job description
Role overview
Serco Canada Inc. is hiring a Driver Examiner 1 for its Oshawa DriveTest Centre. This full-time on-site position offers a starting hourly wage of $28.25 and is part of the team delivering driver examination services on behalf of the Ontario Ministry of Transportation.
The role suits someone who enjoys public-facing work in a fast-moving, service-oriented setting. Driver Examiners support customers through different stages of the licensing process, carry out road tests, assess driving performance, and communicate results clearly and professionally.
The position is based at one of Ontario’s DriveTest Centre locations and may also involve travel points depending on operational needs.
What the job involves
You will work with customers and internal teams to evaluate applicants during road tests and, where qualified, controlled class motorcycle tests. The work includes assessing vehicle handling, compliance with traffic laws, judgment under pressure, and safe driving behavior. You will also explain test outcomes, note areas for improvement, complete evaluation records, and enter results into the system.
This position supports fair and consistent testing in an environment that helps candidates perform at their best. It also requires strong customer service, good judgment, and careful handling of sensitive personal information.
Key duties
The main responsibilities include testing applicants at the G2 and G licence levels, and if qualified and needed, at the M2, M and controlled class (ABZ) levels. The role also includes answering licensing questions, checking applicant identity, explaining re-test and licensing procedures, and helping resolve related issues.
You may be required to travel to testing points, support special-needs or disability-related road tests, and perform other duties assigned by management. The role also includes maintaining confidentiality and following all Ministry, company, safety, environmental, drug and alcohol, and quality requirements.
Safety and working conditions
This role requires attention to workplace safety and the proper use of equipment and protective devices. You must help maintain a safe, healthy, and sustainable work environment and report unsafe conditions when identified.
Working hours can vary depending on customer demand and centre operating hours. The position may involve extended shifts, including evenings and, in some periods, Saturdays and Sundays. You may also be exposed to weather conditions, vehicle-related risks, and other minor hazards. The job includes moderate mental and physical effort.
Training and compliance
Employment depends on passing a Criminal Record Check (CPIC) and a fingerprint criminal record check. You must also take part in required security measures, IDEC testing, and both initial and maintenance training for the road test categories you are qualified to conduct.
Training includes classroom instruction, coaching, and on-the-job shadowing at a DriveTest Centre. If you do not successfully complete any part of the training, employment may end immediately.
Education and licensing requirements
A GED or high school diploma is required. You must hold a valid Ontario Class G driver’s licence and have at least four years of driving experience, verified from the “date first licenced” on the Ontario licence. If applicable to the role, a valid Class M and/or controlled class driver’s licence is also required. During employment, you must maintain no more than four demerit points and no more than three violations.
Two years of experience showing strong customer service skills is required. Intermediate computer ability is also necessary. Familiarity with the DriveTest program, related legislation, government policies, and company procedures is preferred.
Skills and competencies
The role calls for strong service skills, calm handling of difficult situations, multitasking ability, and sound judgment. You must be able to manage confidential personal data responsibly and make decisions quickly and accurately.
Other important abilities include clear communication, consistent assessment, observation and evaluation skills, awareness of driving standards, stress management, and the ability to work independently within a scheduled day.
