Role Overview
The Director of Quality will oversee all quality assurance and control activities, ensuring superior product standards across manufacturing and purchased goods. This role involves designing, implementing, and maintaining rigorous quality systems, driving continuous process improvements, managing supplier quality, validating new products, and conducting failure analyses of returned items. You will collaborate closely with multiple departments and suppliers, including Engineering, Product Management, Marketing, Production, and Distribution, and may need to engage outside standard business hours approximately 15% of the time due to global partnerships.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute comprehensive quality infrastructure including policies, procedures, and inspection plans covering incoming materials, in-process, and final product quality controls.
- Manage inspection and documentation for manufactured and incoming products destined for sale.
- Ensure vendor compliance through Certificate of Conformance validation and alignment with international quality teams, involving up to 15% international travel.
- Implement and monitor KPIs to evaluate overall and individual quality team performance.
- Oversee Returned Merchandise Authorization evaluation, coordinate root cause analysis with Engineering and Sales.
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives such as ISO 9001 process implementation, including internal warehouse audits and training of quality personnel.
- Coordinate First Article Inspection Reports (FAIR) development with Engineering, Product Management, and suppliers for new products, ensuring compliance with FAIR protocols.
- Maintain accurate, up-to-date documentation and quality records.
- Forecast and prepare necessary equipment, personnel, and processes anticipating future demands, employing data trend analysis and risk management.
- Incorporate emerging technologies like robotics and automation into quality assurance processes.
- Provide leadership, resources, and support to the Quality team.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a quality-related discipline with a minimum of 5 years’ relevant experience, or equivalent demonstrated success in quality leadership within manufacturing or quality environments.
- Deep understanding of quality best practices, continuous improvement principles, and ISO 9001 standards.
- Basic familiarity with LED technology, including drivers, lighting terminology, photometry, power supplies, and controls.
- Strong leadership and employee management skills, including work planning and delegation.
- Proficiency in business mathematics and statistical analysis.
- Competence with Microsoft Office suite and Google applications; experience with ERP and PLM systems preferred.
- Exceptional attention to detail, time management, and problem-solving capabilities.
- Ability to safely operate metrology instruments such as calipers, handheld photometers, and multimeters for assessing product conformity.
- Excellent organizational skills to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and prioritize effectively.
- Strong English language skills in grammar, vocabulary, spelling, and punctuation.
- Experience with imaging measuring tools or CMM programming is advantageous.
