Job description
Position Overview
The Director of Purchasing will be accountable for keeping products available, strengthening supplier performance, and improving inventory efficiency across Schreiber Foods International’s global and domestic supply chain. This position directs the purchasing function, manages vendor partnerships, and shapes sourcing strategy to support business continuity and growth.
As the role develops, it will also take on import-related responsibilities. The successful candidate is expected to build strong knowledge of international logistics, customs and regulatory requirements, and import execution through close collaboration and knowledge transfer with the current VP of Imports.
Primary Responsibilities
- Guide a team of purchasing managers responsible for vendor management, procurement execution, pricing, and contract discussions.
- Maintain strong in-stock levels across all SKUs through disciplined inventory planning and demand forecasting.
- Track sales movement, stock levels, and demand patterns to avoid shortages and overstock situations.
- Own inventory results, including turns, carrying efficiency, working capital performance, and reduction of excess stock.
- Reduce supply disruption risk by monitoring crop conditions, worldwide supply constraints, and alternate sourcing options.
- Set clear ownership, performance goals, and development plans for the purchasing team.
- Improve processes within purchasing and, over time, import operations, including support for new product commercialization.
- Run regular purchasing meetings and present updates to leadership.
- Preserve and expand long-term supplier relationships while also identifying new sourcing opportunities.
- Assess suppliers based on cost, service quality, and dependability.
- Build dual-source and continuity plans across important product groups.
- Represent the company at two annual trade shows, the Summer Fancy Food Show in New York City and SIAL/Anuga in Europe, including setting supplier meetings and coordinating with marketing on the yearly supplier reception in New York City.
- Visit supplier factories selectively when needed to verify quality and safety compliance.
- Stay informed on global crop developments, pricing shifts, and wider market factors that affect supply, then share updates with sales, leadership, and customers through a quarterly market report.
- Collaborate with Sales to match supply with customer demand and growth plans, including participation in weekly sales meetings.
- Partner with QA to maintain compliance with FSVP, food safety requirements, product quality specifications, and FDA labeling regulations.
- Work with the VP of Imports to develop expertise in global logistics, ocean freight, customs, FDA and USDA requirements, shipment documentation, and end-to-end shipment execution.
- Support decisions and improvements related to import operations and prepare to eventually lead that function.
Key Performance Measures
- In-stock percentage and service level
- Inventory turns and working capital efficiency
- Inventory value relative to target
- Excess and slow-moving inventory reduction
- Supplier performance on cost and service
