About the Company
Cortland is a real estate investment and management firm looking for a strategic, process-oriented Director of Payroll to support a remote contract engagement.
About the Role
This is a 100% remote, US-based contract opportunity within the real estate and property management sector. The position is centered on improving payroll operations, expanding automation, and maintaining compliance across a large population of corporate and hourly employees.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and improve payroll processes from end to end to increase accuracy and make operations more efficient.
- Manage payroll tax activity across multiple states, along with related federal and local reporting obligations.
- Offer leadership and direction to the internal payroll function so daily execution stays consistent and reliable.
- Oversee external payroll partners and HRIS/payroll systems such as ADP, Workday, and UKG.
- Lead month-end and year-end reconciliations and serve as the main contact for audits.
Qualifications
- At least 8 years of payroll experience, including 3 years or more in a director-level or other senior leadership role.
- Background in property management, real estate, hospitality, or retail, with experience supporting a large multi-location workforce.
- Strong working knowledge of enterprise HRIS and payroll platforms.
- Ability to work independently, analyze complex issues, and meet tight deadlines.
