About the Company
Tala is hiring a strategic, operations-minded Director of Payroll for a remote contract assignment. This role is focused on making payroll processes accurate, compliant, and efficient for a workforce spread across the United States and multiple countries.
About the Role
In this contract leadership role, you will assess the current payroll setup, improve the underlying structure, and put stronger workflows in place. You will run payroll operations independently and help establish a more scalable, best-practice approach.
Responsibilities
- Manage payroll for U.S. employees across multiple states as well as international teams, ensuring every cycle is processed accurately, on time, and in line with regulations.
- Review the full payroll process to spot inefficiencies and introduce automation or system integrations that improve speed and reliability.
- Handle compliance across local, state, federal, and international tax requirements, including filings and labor-law obligations.
- Oversee relationships with global payroll vendors and HRIS/software platforms to maintain clean data and smooth system operation.
- Own month-end and year-end reconciliations, support general ledger postings with the accounting team, and act as the primary contact for payroll audits.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate brings extensive payroll leadership experience, deep familiarity with multi-state and global payroll environments, and the confidence to operate in a fast-moving remote contract setting.
Experience
Applicants should have 8+ years of payroll management experience, including at least 3 years in a director-level or senior leadership capacity.
Systems and Tools
Hands-on experience with enterprise HRIS and global payroll platforms such as Workday, ADP, Deel, or Papaya Global is expected.
Work Style
