Role overview
Yellowknife Education District No. 1 (YK1) is seeking a Director of Operations to join the leadership team at the YK1 Board Office in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. This position plays a key part in ensuring that the district’s facilities and equipment are maintained in safe, clean, and fully functional condition.
The role is responsible for the care, maintenance, and planning of six schools, the District Office, the Maintenance Shop, and several portable facilities across YK1’s service area. It also includes supervision and guidance for four maintenance employees, along with oversight of school janitorial work.
Throughout the year, the Director of Operations also coordinates and manages multiple contractors who perform work on YK1 facilities. The position is essential to supporting the safety of students, staff, administrators, families, and visitors, while contributing to YK1’s broader service to the community.
Qualifications
- A degree in engineering with at least 5 years of related experience, or
- Completion of a certified technologist program, or
- A Fifth Class Power Engineer Certificate.
- Journeyman certification in a mechanical or electrical trade, combined with 10 years of progressively responsible experience in planning, development, and control, plus 2 years of experience in a cross-cultural environment.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
Requirements and knowledge areas
The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate solid knowledge and experience in the following areas:
- Asset management in a comprehensive setting
- Full-scale facility maintenance programs
- Risk management across facilities
- Long-range capital planning
- Relevant trade areas such as carpentry, plumbing, welding, electrical, and mechanical work
- Building maintenance systems, including heating, plumbing, and electrical systems
- Human resources practices, including delegation and employee discipline
- Administration and management, including budgeting, purchasing, tendering, and cost control
- Applicable federal, territorial, and municipal legislation
- Project management experience
- Health and safety knowledge and experience aligned with WSCC guidelines, including the ability to train staff
- Strong team-building, interpersonal, organizational, communication, and time-management abilities
