Role Summary

The Director of Construction Operations oversees daily management and coordination of construction projects from contract initiation through final closeout. This role involves autonomous leadership of management staff across all active projects to ensure successful outcomes aligned with company standards. The position includes mentoring project managers, engineers, and the general superintendent. Reporting directly to the company President, this role requires periodic travel to local and out-of-state job sites.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute proactively to company strategic planning, policies, and direction as part of management team.
  • Manage and guide project teams throughout all stages including permitting, mobilization, construction, inspection, and closeout.
  • Support development and implementation of critical company programs such as safety, quality, continuous learning, and operations.
  • Effectively manage multiple projects at varying stages, ensuring timely progress and smooth phase transitions.
  • Monitor construction progress emphasizing safety, quality, schedule adherence, and team collaboration.
  • Hold project teams accountable for meeting contractual commitments on scope, cost, and schedule.
  • Reinforce and reward company pillars including Safety, Quality, Sense of Urgency, Community, and Fun.
  • Collaborate on project logistics plans and review preliminary schedules with project managers and company president.
  • Represent the company positively in various project meetings, providing constructive feedback on costs, constructability, and timelines.
  • Promote development of strong relationships with subcontractors, suppliers, clients, and designers.
  • Ensure completion of timely project closeouts.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.

Candidate Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or construction management.
  • At least 15 years of experience in commercial construction.
  • Deep expertise in building construction techniques, materials, systems, market practices, and trade standards.
  • Minimum 5 years supervisory experience leading and mentoring teams ranging from 6 to 20 members.

  • Strong familiarity with the responsibilities of Project Managers and Superintendents.
  • A positive, forward-thinking attitude with strong teamwork and customer service orientation.
  • Flexibility to adapt to daily tasks in a small team within a larger organization.

Reporting & Supervision

The role reports directly to the President and oversees all operational employees. It includes leadership, performance management, and involvement in hiring within the department.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

This role requires approximately 40% office time and 60% field presence, with multi-state travel. Physical requirements include the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and sustain standing and bending as needed. Safety in potentially hazardous job site conditions is a priority.

Work Schedule & Travel

Full-time position with typical workweek Monday through Friday. Hours vary depending on project demands. Local travel during business hours is common with occasional out-of-area and overnight travel expected.
