Role Summary
The Director of Logistics leads and strategizes all logistics operations across ON.energy projects. Reporting to the VP of Supply Chain, this position manages the logistics framework including freight strategy, carrier partnerships, customs compliance, cost control, and team growth. The leader translates project requirements into scalable logistics capabilities and collaborates with executives on risk, capital allocation, and organizational development. Suitable candidates will possess extensive experience in heavy industrial or engineered energy equipment logistics and strong leadership ability to build a top-performing team.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and oversee logistics strategies for various projects, encompassing domestic/international freight, import/export regulations, and last-mile deliveries.
- Create and maintain operational procedures, tools, templates, and performance indicators for the logistics function.
- Enhance logistics capabilities to support expanding projects and geographic reach.
- Collaborate with Project Management, Scheduling, and Procurement to ensure logistics aligns with project timelines and commissioning.
- Contribute logistics insights during project planning, including cost modeling, lead times, and risk assessment.
- Manage escalation and develop contingency plans for logistics disruptions impacting schedules or budgets.
- Support planning for complex or restricted access customer site deliveries.
- Report on logistics performance, risks, and improvement initiatives to executives.
- Manage strategic relationships with freight forwarders, 3PLs, heavy haul carriers, customs brokers, and port agents.
- Lead and develop Logistics Coordinators, overseeing coaching, performance, and career progression.
- Determine team structure and hiring needs as the logistics department grows.
- Promote a culture of accountability, communication, and operational excellence.
- Serve as the senior escalation contact for challenging logistics issues.
- Ensure compliance with U.S. customs, export controls (EAR/ITAR), and international trade laws.
- Oversee accuracy and completeness of trade documents including invoices, BOLs, certificates, classifications, and filings.
- Handle freight claims, damage resolutions, and carrier corrective actions.
- Maintain audit-ready documentation for finance, project management, and regulatory purposes.
Qualifications
- 8 to 15 years experience in logistics, supply chain, or freight management with minimum 3 years in leadership positions.
- Proven expertise managing logistics for engineered-to-order or heavy industrial electrical equipment such as transformers, switchgear, industrial skids, or battery energy storage system components.
- Deep understanding of freight modes including LTL, FTL, flatbed, heavy haul, ocean (FCL/LCL), air freight, drayage, and last-mile delivery.
- Strong knowledge of U.S. import/export compliance covering HTS classification, ISF, customs entries, Incoterms, and associated documentation.
- Experience negotiating and managing contracts and service agreements with freight forwarders, 3PLs, and carriers.
- Proficient with logistics software and reporting tools such as Smartsheet, Power BI, ERP/SCM modules, and Transportation Management Systems.
