Role Overview

Motlow State Community College is hiring a Director of Internal Audit for its campus in Moore County or Smyrna, Tennessee. This position is part of the institution’s internal audit function and reports within the college’s governance and oversight framework.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for this role is $94,481 to $97,481 per year. Motlow State offers a strong benefits package that includes state retirement coverage, a 401(k) plan with employer match, 13 paid holidays each year, annual and sick leave, health and dental insurance, tuition discounts, and employee discounts through the state. Employment is also dependent on funding availability and budget approval.

Position Purpose

The Director of Internal Audit is responsible for carrying out internal financial, operational, and compliance audits in line with the approved college audit plan, or as assigned by the President or the TBR Chief Audit Executive. The role focuses on evaluating internal controls, supporting continuous improvement, strengthening risk management and fraud awareness, improving efficiency across academic, administrative, and financial functions, and confirming compliance with college, Tennessee Board of Regents, state, and federal requirements.

Key Duties

The position includes leading the internal audit program, reviewing systems and transactions for control effectiveness and compliance, and recommending improvements to procedures, records, and systems. It also involves handling special investigations, working with college executives on policy and operational matters, preparing audit workpapers and reports, supporting the annual audit plan, contributing to enterprise risk assessment efforts, overseeing the department budget, maintaining ethics and quality assurance standards, and taking on additional duties as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in accounting or a related business discipline, an active CPA or CIA credential, and at least five years of professional auditing experience. Professional accounting experience may replace auditing experience on a year-for-year basis for up to two years. Candidates must also show experience managing projects and working independently.

Preferred Qualifications

A master’s degree in accounting or a related business field from a regionally accredited institution is preferred, along with an active CPA or CIA certification and at least five years of auditing experience. Strong preference will be given to candidates with higher education audit experience, experience auditing large computerized accounting and information systems such as Banner (Ellucian), and documented supervisory experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The ideal candidate should understand GAAP as established by GASB, relevant state statutes, TBR policies, and related accounting and auditing standards. The role requires sound judgment, the ability to handle sensitive or confidential matters, strong written and verbal communication, effective collaboration with diverse stakeholders, solid interpersonal skills, relationship-building ability, strong computer literacy, and the confidence to present to executive, staff, and community audiences.

Application Instructions

Interested applicants must submit both an application and a resume online to be considered.
