Job description

Role overview

The Director of Information Technology is the most senior technology leader for Washington National Cathedral. This role provides long-range technology direction, day-to-day operational oversight, and subject-matter expertise to support the Cathedral’s mission and business goals. The position is focused on improving organizational effectiveness, reinforcing cybersecurity, elevating service quality, and keeping technology platforms dependable and sustainable.

The role is accountable for the full technology environment, including infrastructure, security, cloud-based services, telecommunications, enterprise software, vendor relationships, and support for end users. In close partnership with Cathedral leadership, the Director turns organizational priorities into practical technology plans, advises on new technologies and spending decisions, and builds multi-year strategies that encourage innovation while protecting resources.

Along with supporting Washington National Cathedral, this position also leads technology direction for shared services tied to the Protestant Episcopal Cathedral Foundation (PECF). A major part of the job is helping plan how those shared services will evolve over time, including reducing reliance on shared systems and supporting the eventual transition of PECF technology away from the cathedral.org environment. The Director works collaboratively with stakeholders across the Cathedral, PECF, and other Close institutions to keep services secure, effective, and aligned with institutional priorities.

Key responsibilities

  • Act as the Cathedral’s top technology advisor to executive leadership on strategy, innovation, cybersecurity, infrastructure, and digital transformation.
  • Create and maintain a multi-year technology roadmap that reflects organizational goals, operational demands, and available funding.
  • Spot opportunities to improve efficiency, security, collaboration, and service delivery through technology.
  • Recommend solutions related to new technologies, system upgrades, cloud adoption, cybersecurity, and digital workplace tools.
  • Work with Cathedral leadership to anticipate future technology requirements and plan for sustainable growth.
  • Guide governance, risk management, disaster recovery, and business continuity planning.
  • Oversee Cathedral technology operations, including infrastructure, systems administration, networking, cybersecurity, telecom, cloud platforms, software applications, and user support.
  • Maintain the reliability, security, uptime, and performance of technology systems and services.
  • Set and monitor support processes and service standards so employees receive timely and effective assistance.
  • Build and maintain technology policies, procedures, standards, and supporting documentation.
  • Track technology assets and lifecycle planning for hardware, software, licensing, and replacement cycles.
  • Lead technology projects from planning through implementation and ongoing support.
  • Provide technology leadership and operational support for PECF systems and services according to shared-service agreements.
  • Partner with PECF leaders on needs assessment, priorities, budgets, and strategic initiatives.
  • Ensure PECF technology services are delivered efficiently, securely, and in line with organizational objectives.
  • Advise PECF leadership on future-state planning and opportunities to increase independence where appropriate.
  • Direct planning and execution for shared technology services between Washington National Cathedral and PECF.
  • Build and maintain a long-term plan to simplify and reduce shared technology infrastructure and services.
  • Lead planning for PECF’s future transition away from the cathedral.org domain and related systems.
  • Evaluate technical, operational, financial, and cybersecurity impacts of shared-service transitions with stakeholders.
  • Protect continuity of operations while implementing changes that strengthen autonomy and long-term sustainability.
  • Lead cybersecurity planning, monitoring, awareness training, and incident response readiness.
  • Assess technology risks and recommend practical mitigation measures.
  • Ensure systems and practices align with applicable legal, regulatory, privacy, and security obligations.
  • Keep leadership informed about threats, vulnerabilities, limitations, and emerging risks, along with recommended actions.
  • Prepare and manage operating and capital budgets for technology.
  • Evaluate, negotiate, and manage technology vendors, consultants, and service providers.
  • Ensure investments deliver value, reliability, and alignment with institutional priorities.
  • Serve on the Core Tech Team and coordinate with technology representatives from other Close institutions on shared efforts.
  • Provide technology guidance for enterprise initiatives, major events, audiovisual systems, and operational projects.
  • Explain technical matters clearly to non-technical audiences and help leaders make informed decisions.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Information Systems, Business Administration, or a related discipline, or an equivalent mix of education and experience.
  • At least 7 years of steadily increasing responsibility in managing technology systems, infrastructure, and support services.
  • Proven experience leading technology projects, initiatives, and organizational technology planning.
  • Background in managing vendors, contracts, and budgets related to technology.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to present technical information and recommendations to senior and non-technical audiences.
  • Prior experience in a technology leadership role such as IT Director, Technology Manager, or a similar position is preferred.
  • Experience building and rolling out technology strategy, cybersecurity programs, and long-range roadmaps is preferred.
  • Experience in a nonprofit, educational, religious, or other mission-driven environment is preferred.
  • Experience overseeing shared technology services across multiple organizations, departments, or business units is preferred.
  • Professional certifications such as CISSP, CISM, PMP, ITIL, Microsoft credentials, or related qualifications are preferred.

Additional qualifications and abilities

  • Ability to design and carry out technology strategies that support organizational objectives and operational needs.
  • Strong working knowledge of IT infrastructure, cybersecurity, cloud systems, enterprise applications, and service delivery.
  • Capacity to assess risk, compare solutions, and provide sound recommendations to leadership.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills, including the ability to translate complex technical topics for non-technical audiences.
  • Well-developed project management, budgeting, vendor management, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to build cooperative relationships across departments and work effectively with employees, vendors, consultants, and executives.
  • Strong problem-solving ability, good judgment, and the flexibility to handle several priorities in a changing environment.
  • Commitment to customer service, continuous improvement, and protection of confidential information.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately.

This role may require work beyond standard business hours, including weekends, early mornings, and evenings as needed. The job can involve prolonged walking and standing, especially during events, along with activities such as reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, and climbing stairs without a handrail.
