Role Summary

This director-level role owns strategic sourcing and category management for BioMarin’s external contract development and manufacturing network, including contract manufacturing organizations. It is a highly strategic and operational position responsible for shaping sourcing strategy in one of the most complex categories in pharmaceutical operations.

You will lead category strategy development and the execution of complex sourcing programs for external manufacturing partners. The role combines sourcing expertise with technical understanding so you can assess CMO capabilities, work through demanding regulatory requirements, and bring Quality, Operations, and Supply Chain teams together from strategy design through execution.

In addition to leading the work itself, you will coach and develop a sourcing team, building capability and creating a culture of strong procurement performance. The position also offers the chance to influence BioMarin’s external manufacturing network strategy, generate savings, and strengthen long-term supplier relationships.

Work Location and Schedule

The position is based in Cork or Dublin and follows a hybrid arrangement with two days per week onsite.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead strategic sourcing programs for the external contract manufacturing network, including CMO selection and API sourcing, while designing category strategies that reduce overall procurement spend without compromising quality, compliance, or supply continuity.
• Manage, coach, and develop a team of sourcing professionals, setting performance goals, supporting growth plans, and building a strong talent pipeline for future needs.
• Carry out detailed due diligence when evaluating CMOs, covering technical capability, regulatory standing, quality systems, IP ownership structures, and capacity planning, including assessment of capabilities in biologics, sterile injectables, and advanced modalities.
• Negotiate complex commercial agreements with CMO partners, including pricing terms, SLAs, quality agreements, technology transfer arrangements, and intellectual property protections, while building governance models that balance risk and partnership.
• Act as a trusted advisor to senior stakeholders and drive alignment across External Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, Technical Development Services, and Regulatory teams so sourcing strategies reflect technical and business needs.
• Build resilient supplier networks that reduce exposure to geopolitical risk, capacity shortages, and supply interruptions through approaches such as dual sourcing, inventory buffers, and regionalized supply models.
• Stay current on the CMO market, including new technologies, capacity trends, pricing movements, regulatory changes, sustainability expectations, and compliance requirements.
• Present strategy updates, supplier performance results, savings progress, and risk assessments to executive leaders and serve as a strategic partner to Global External Operations and Network Strategy teams.

Requirements

• At least 10 years of progressive experience in sourcing, category management, and contract negotiation within biopharma contract manufacturing.
• Strong experience managing CMO relationships and a solid understanding of biologics and small-molecule manufacturing processes.
• Proven success in leading sourcing teams, including managing managers and building high-performing organizations.
• Experience scaling sourcing or procurement teams, ideally in a contract manufacturing or CMO environment.
• Excellent stakeholder management and influencing ability, with experience working effectively with cross-functional and executive partners.
• Track record of running complex sourcing initiatives for pharmaceutical manufacturing services such as upstream/downstream processing, fill-finish, and analytical testing.
• Strong negotiation capability and experience structuring commercial contracts, SLAs, quality agreements, IP protections, and technology transfer protocols.
• Ability to make sourcing decisions that balance cost, quality, regulatory compliance, and supply chain resilience.
• Demonstrated history of delivering measurable savings while maintaining or improving quality and service outcomes.
• Deep knowledge of the CMO market landscape.
• Experience handling pharmaceutical supply chain challenges such as API and excipient sourcing, long lead times, dual sourcing, and geopolitical supply risk.
• Ability to lead cross-functional work with Manufacturing, Quality, Technical Development, Regulatory, and Finance stakeholders.
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, Life Sciences, or a related field is required.
• MBA or an advanced degree such as an MS or PhD is strongly preferred.
• Professional procurement certifications such as MCIPS, CPSM, or CPM are highly desirable.
• Deep technical knowledge of pharmaceutical manufacturing for both small molecules and biologics, including cGMP, FDA, EMA, ICH, and quality systems.
• Proficiency in strategic sourcing methods, category management frameworks, SRM systems, and spend analysis tools.
• Experience with contract lifecycle management, e-sourcing platforms, and procurement analytics.
• Strong project management skills with the ability to handle several complex sourcing initiatives at the same time under tight timelines.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present complex recommendations to executive audiences.
• Experience working in global, matrixed organizations and influencing without direct authority.
