About the Role

Join a driven and inclusive high-performance team dedicated to impactful results at a leading Canadian bank. The Enterprise Strategy group crafts and guides the Bank’s overarching strategic agenda, addressing both enterprise-wide and specific business or functional priorities. Reporting directly to the Vice President of Enterprise Strategy, this Director role supports the conception, implementation, and tracking of the Global Banking and Markets (GBM) strategy within the Bank’s broader strategic framework. Collaborating closely with GBM leadership, Enterprise Strategy partners, and various Corporate Functions, the Director offers strategic insights, assists in planning, and leads key initiatives and in-depth analyses across GBM.

The ideal candidate combines robust skills in strategy development, comprehensive banking knowledge, and deep familiarity with Global Banking and Markets (including Corporate & Investment Banking and Capital Markets) and demonstrates effective engagement with senior stakeholders. Responsibilities include formulating strategic direction, breaking down strategies into actionable plans, applying rigorous analysis, and ensuring that strategies are practical, measurable, and executable.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing and updating GBM’s strategy aligned with the Bank’s enterprise strategy, ensuring connectivity across business lines and functions.
  • Lead focused strategic workstreams and detailed analyses on GBM priorities such as growth, profitability, client experience, and operating models.
  • Identify and evaluate strategic opportunities and challenges affecting GBM, including market trends, competition, regulations, and risks.
  • Support the GBM strategic planning cycle, preparing analytical materials for executive and Board reviews, consistent with enterprise protocols.
  • Offer structured analytical support and strategic advice under the Vice President’s guidance.
  • Create and manage execution plans for GBM strategic initiatives, working collaboratively across functions to maintain alignment and meet milestones.
  • Develop key performance indicators and monitoring tools to track advancement towards strategic goals.
  • Conduct benchmarking against both local and global peers to pinpoint performance differences, opportunities, and best practices.
  • Monitor risks and dependencies during strategy execution, escalating challenges with clear solutions and recommendations.
  • Help periodically assess GBM’s strategic positioning, operating model, and performance results.
  • Serve as a strategic advisor by providing thoughtful challenge, new viewpoints, and evidence-based insights to GBM and enterprise leaders.
  • Translate complex analyses into compelling narratives and presentations suited for executive audiences.
  • Contribute to planning and facilitating GBM and enterprise strategy sessions, offsites, and leadership workshops.
  • Stay informed on global capital markets, investment banking trends, and financial service developments to enhance strategic advice.
  • Build strong partnerships with GBM leadership and colleagues across finance, risk, technology, and other functions to foster collaboration and alignment.
  • Bridge organizational silos to support execution of GBM priorities and serve as a trusted advisor to senior executives, aiding in priority clarification and strategy implementation.
  • Lead and develop junior strategy team members, helping cultivate a high-performing and inclusive team culture.
  • Support talent development through coaching, feedback, and sharing knowledge.
  • Adhere to the Bank’s risk culture and control standards throughout strategic activities, integrating financial, operational, regulatory, and conduct risk considerations.
  • Promote a client-centric mindset by including customer impact and results in strategy development and recommendations.

Role Dimensions

  • Leads multiple complex cross-functional strategy projects across GBM and the broader organization.
  • Makes independent judgments on key, high-impact initiatives, consulting senior leaders as appropriate.
  • Engages regularly with senior GBM and enterprise executives (SVP, EVP) and occasionally with Group Heads and Board members.
  • Operates within a cooperative environment requiring influential communication without direct authority.

Qualifications and Experience

  • University degree in Business, Finance, Economics, or related disciplines; MBA or equivalent advanced degree preferred.
  • Typically 7 to 12 years of relevant experience including strategy roles in financial services or top-tier management consulting.
  • Strong familiarity with Global Banking and Markets, including Capital Markets and Investment Banking products and businesses.
  • Proven ability to lead complex strategy and transformation initiatives involving multiple stakeholders.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and financial modeling skills.
  • Ability to communicate complex concepts clearly and succinctly to executive audiences.
  • Collaborative leadership approach with a track record of developing high-potential talent.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication proficiency.
  • Advanced skills with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Knowledge of French and/or Spanish is a plus.
