Role Overview

The BBC World Service is expanding its editorial team in Abuja to adapt to evolving media consumption trends in sub-Saharan Africa. BBC Hausa remains a highly trusted source of international news for West African audiences and its global diaspora. The service is undergoing a transformation into a digital-first, video-centered operation targeting a younger generation that primarily consumes news on smartphones and social platforms such as YouTube.

Responsibilities

  • Create impactful digital journalism content tailored for mobile-first and digital audiences.
  • Use strong news judgment to find compelling story angles and simplify complex topics for clarity.
  • Engage in full multimedia production, including scripting, video, audio, and social media editing and publishing.
  • Produce content that resonates culturally with Hausa-speaking audiences regionally and internationally.
  • Leverage audience analytics, emerging technologies, and AI-supported workflows to optimize content while upholding editorial standards.
  • Craft high-quality written and spoken content in both Hausa and English with precision, impartiality, and integrity.
  • Work collaboratively in a dynamic newsroom, manage multiple priorities effectively, and maintain positive relationships across teams.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience creating content across platforms like YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, X, and TikTok, with knowledge of audience engagement and growth techniques.
  • Proficiency in video production and editing tools such as Final Cut Pro and QEdit to produce diverse video lengths.
  • Ability to analyze audience data and feedback to enhance content strategy and maximize reach and impact.
  • Strong storytelling, scripting, and presentation abilities suited for digital and younger audiences.
  • Understanding of youth consumption habits to tailor formats, tone, and narration strategies effectively.
  • Experience applying AI tools and emerging technologies in content creation and production workflows while maintaining editorial quality.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills for working efficiently in diverse teams with digital production and editorial expertise.

Additional Information and Terms

This role is classified as Job Band C, offering a full-time, permanent contract within the BBC World Service department. Flexible working arrangements are open for discussion during the offer phase, though not mandatory at application time.

Employment offers are contingent upon legal right to work in Nigeria and successful completion of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) or equivalent exemption.
