Job description

Programme Overview

Join our Digital AI & Automation Graduate Programme based in Auckland, designed to immerse you in the evolving world of AI and automation within banking. Over 10-12 months, you will start as a permanent employee in February 2027 and engage in an orientation to understand Westpac New Zealand and collaborate with other graduates. Post-programme, we will assist in securing a role tailored to your skills and interests within the business.

Experience and Support

Throughout the programme, you will be supported by AI and Automation leaders, mentors, and champions. The structured experience will help you identify key interest areas, with personalized training sessions that strengthen both technical capabilities and soft skills, accelerating your growth professionally and personally. You will also have opportunities to contribute to internal communities, volunteering, and sustainability initiatives enhancing your overall work-life balance.

Role Responsibilities

As a Graduate, expect to work closely with the tools, processes, and professionals advancing Westpac's responsible and customer-centric use of AI and automation. Your pathway could include developing AI/machine learning models to solve business challenges, acting as an AI ethicist ensuring fairness, transparency, and ethical integrity, or specializing in automation to streamline processes and improve outcomes. Daily tasks may involve analyzing, testing, and problem solving in AI, automation, and digital improvement projects, collaborating with diverse teams across technology, operations, risk, compliance, data, and product, and contributing thoughtfully to responsible innovation considering fairness, privacy, and customer impact in a regulated banking environment.

Candidate Profile and Eligibility

Eligible applicants must be New Zealand or Australian citizens or permanent residents who are in their final year of study or have completed an undergraduate or postgraduate degree within the last 12 months. This entry-level role suits graduates who are curious, practical, and eager to learn — prior expertise in AI or automation is not necessary. Key attributes include a customer-focused mindset, strong attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and a collaborative approach. Candidates should be interested in AI, automation, data, technology, customer experience, or business improvements, be confident in asking questions, organized, comfortable handling processes and information, and enthusiastic about building a career at Westpac.
