Job description
Role Objective and Overview
The Design Lead will be responsible for performing civil and structural design and analysis for substations under PT&D International Contracts, focusing particularly on projects in UAE. This role involves development and review of design documentation, structural drawings, and coordination across multiple disciplines such as electrical, instrumentation, and mechanical engineering. The lead engineer will oversee a team of engineers and draftspersons to ensure quality, timely delivery within budget, and compliance with client requirements.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Drafting and preparing design documentation for substation civil and structural components.
- Reviewing detailed engineering drawings and structural plans before submission.
- Submitting structural drawings and design documentation to clients to obtain approvals.
- Developing Document Control Index (DCI) and managing design documentation flow.
- Collaborating with site teams and clients to ensure design requirements and drawings align with project needs.
- Preparing and verifying Bills of Quantities (BOQ) and materials lists by referencing prior projects.
- Formulating Design Basis Reports to define scope of work and obtain client approval.
- Engaging with clients for approval and clarifications of drawings.
- Providing clarifications to site teams regarding design drawings.
- Optimizing structural quantities to meet bidding constraints while satisfying client specifications.
- Communicating effectively with interdisciplinary teams to gather and incorporate civil engineering inputs.
- Marking up and reviewing drafting work produced by junior staff.
- Assessing pre-bid queries, clarifications, amendments, soil investigation reports, and tender documents.
Technical Expertise and Knowledge
- Proficiency in analysis, design, and drawing of civil and structural elements including GIS substations, control room buildings, transformer and outdoor equipment foundations, guard houses, staff quarters, grading, roads, drainage, outdoor steel structures, and related cabling infrastructure.
- Ability to review vendor engineering documents for civil and structural design compliance.
- Familiarity with switchyard gantry towers, support structures and foundations.
- Competence to review fabrication and detailed drawings for steel support structures.
- Knowledge of both domestic and international design codes and standards.
- Expertise with steel and reinforced concrete (RCC) structures as well as geotechnical considerations.
- Understanding of site-specific factors such as topography, environmental impacts, and soil conditions for accurate design calculations.
