Job description
Overview
The University of Waikato is looking for an experienced and forward-thinking academic to lead Te Aka Mātuatua, School of Science, as its next Dean. This senior role offers the chance to shape the School’s strategic direction and academic ambitions within a research-intensive environment focused on solving significant challenges in New Zealand and internationally.
The School sits within the Division of STEM, Te Wānanga Pūtaiao, and includes a broad scientific community spanning Biomedical Science, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Ecology and Biodiversity, Environmental Sciences, Marine Sciences, and Molecular and Cellular Biology. Its work is delivered across the Hamilton and Tauranga campuses. The School places strong emphasis on cross-disciplinary collaboration, engagement with sectors and communities, and the integration of mātauranga Māori into teaching and research.
Key responsibilities
- Define and communicate an ambitious academic direction that strengthens research quality, innovation, and leadership at both national and international levels.
- Develop an inclusive and high-performing environment where staff and students are supported to succeed.
- Oversee the management of people, funding, and academic programmes across teaching, postgraduate study, and research activities.
- Identify and progress opportunities to grow enrolments, partnerships, and diversified income streams.
- Strengthen connections with industry, public agencies, iwi, and community stakeholders to extend the School’s reach and influence.
- Contribute as part of the Division’s Leadership Team, working closely with the Pro Vice-Chancellor and other Deans to deliver shared strategic objectives.
Candidate profile
The ideal candidate is a respected academic leader with a PhD in a field relevant to the School, a substantial research portfolio with recognition beyond New Zealand, and a strong background in tertiary teaching. You should also bring proven experience leading academic teams, managing people in complex and diverse settings, and handling financial and resource planning responsibly.
Experience at Associate Professor or Professor level, together with extensive administrative experience in a School, Faculty, or Division, will be considered a strong advantage. The University is seeking someone who works collaboratively, thinks strategically, builds trust, supports the growth of others, and actively contributes to a culture grounded in partnership with Māori, integrity, diversity, and creativity.
