Job description

Overview

The Indianapolis Department of Public Works works to improve everyday life for residents by maintaining public spaces and infrastructure, delivering public services, and supporting multi-modal connectivity, green spaces, accessibility, capital improvements, and public-private collaboration. The agency maintains public infrastructure and parkland, manages solid waste collection, and keeps the city vehicle fleet operational. As one of the city’s largest agencies, DPW focuses on efficient and effective service for both residents and visitors.

Job Summary

This role supports DPW Operations through data analysis, quality control, and day-to-day administration of asset and workflow management systems. Reporting to the Program Manager: Data & Tech, the position works closely with Garage Superintendents and Union Management, supports weather-related operations, and contributes to special projects.

Responsibilities

  • Handle the daily administration of DPW Operations work orders and related data.
  • Review operational data for accuracy and quality, including labor expense, material usage, work locations, and production results.
  • Work with Garage Superintendents and Union Management on daily logs and process improvement efforts.
  • Run data queries and prepare recurring reports for procurement, budget planning, workflow coordination, and resource planning.
  • Confirm that Service Requests are closed when work orders are entered so Mayor’s Action Center records remain current and correct.
  • Support countywide snow operations by tracking plow routes and schedules, salt usage, and other operational needs.
  • Provide technical help and oversight to DPW garages during annual benefits enrollment and coordinate with finance/payroll teams as needed.
  • Assist DPW Dispatch and other operations personnel as required.
  • Take on additional duties as assigned by management when necessary.

Qualifications

Applicants should have a high school diploma or GED and at least one year of experience in a general office setting. Familiarity with Microsoft Outlook is needed, along with strong communication skills and the ability to interact professionally and tactfully with a range of people. Good record-keeping, time management, and project management abilities are also required.

Working Conditions

The job is based in a standard office environment within DPW garages. Some after-hours and weekend work may be required during weather events. Occasional travel between DPW garages may also be needed.

Physical Conditions

  • Most of the day is spent sitting at a desk.
  • Light lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling of objects and materials weighing about 5 to 10 pounds may be required.
  • Work may involve long periods at a keyboard or workstation.
  • The role requires the ability to hear sounds and notice visual cues or signals.
  • Oral communication is necessary for the job.

Equal Employment Opportunity

The City of Indianapolis Marion County is an equal opportunity employer. Employment decisions are made without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, veteran status, or disability status. Additional Information

If an applicant’s qualifications match the posted requirements, the application will be forwarded to the hiring agency. Once the agency receives it, all interview and selection communication will be handled directly by the agency. Applicants should note the contact details of the person arranging the interview, since City-County HR will not have access to that information or participate in the interview process. HR will only confirm whether the application has been referred. The formal offer will be issued by HR after the final selection is made.
