Job description
Role Overview
Frederic Schad is looking for an experienced Customs Documentation Clerk in Kingston, Jamaica. This role is focused on preparing, checking, and managing customs paperwork, coordinating shipment clearance activities, and ensuring compliance with customs and local regulations throughout the process.
Key Functions
- Check tariff classifications against the customs records and applicable rules.
- Keep the internal clearance register current and accurate.
- Ensure customs and local legal requirements are met before, during, and after the clearance process.
- Liaise with airlines, shipping lines, suppliers, and contractors to support smooth shipment movement and compliance with internal procedures and customer needs.
- Prepare customs documentation and upload or publish it on the web server.
- Request payment of duties and other applicable taxes from the finance team.
- Prepare and file manifests for shipments.
- Track shipment progress and update company systems such as the Ops log and CargoWise according to business rules.
- Follow up with shipping lines regarding arrival notices.
- Handle export document submission.
- Coordinate with customs brokers to obtain the latest clearance updates.
- Support the physical dispatch of shipments when required.
- Deliver shipments to customers in line with standard operating procedures and customer requirements.
- Apply for customs permits where needed.
- Review invoices submitted by customers.
- Assist with delivery orders in the Port Community System (PCS).
- Identify and report non-conformities and suggest improvements within the role.
- Carry out other operational duties relevant to the position.
Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree is required.
- At least 1 year of experience in a similar role is necessary.
- Working knowledge of MS Office is required.
- Basic understanding of AFR and OFR operations, including handling, documentation, and customs clearance.
- Experience preparing customs declarations for both imports and exports.
- Ability to confirm tariff classifications with Jamaica Customs.
- Strong understanding of customs laws, procedures, and regulations.
