Job description

About the role

This position is for a customer delivery driver based at the Clacton-On-Sea superstore. The role is customer-facing, practical, and varied, combining driving with home delivery service and direct interaction with customers. You will be out on the road representing the business, helping shoppers receive their orders smoothly and professionally.

Availability window

The expected working pattern is spread across the week in the following time windows:

  • Sunday: 14:00 to 19:00
  • Monday: 09:00 to 13:00
  • Tuesday: 19:00 to 23:00
  • Friday: 13:00 to 18:00
  • Saturday: 14:00 to 19:00

The hourly rate begins at £14.18, rising to £15.45 for stores inside the M25. Depending on location, extra payments may also be available.

New colleagues are normally offered at least 16 guaranteed hours per week. If you prefer fewer hours, there may also be options down to a minimum of 12 hours per week. Work schedules are planned within the availability windows, and you will receive three weeks' notice of your exact shifts. Flexible availability is welcomed where it aligns closely with the advertised times.

What the role involves

Customers are central to this job. As the person delivering on behalf of the store, you will meet customers at their homes and help make their shopping experience smooth and reliable. The job is not limited to driving; it also involves helpful communication, service with a friendly manner, and care with every delivery.

The work is physical, active, and changes from shift to shift. You will often work independently while out delivering, but support from managers and colleagues will always be available from the store base.

Responsibilities

  • Keep the delivery van and trays clean, orderly, and ready for use.
  • Leave the yard area clean and free from rubbish, including picking up litter when noticed.
  • Wash trays as part of the tray-washing process.
  • Load the van correctly and check that it is roadworthy before setting off.
  • Speak with customers about any changes to their order, including out-of-stock items and substitutions, and offer refunds where needed.
  • Handle products and deliveries carefully, treating them with the same care you would your own belongings.
  • Reassure customers that substitutions will not cost them extra.
  • Deliver orders within the customer’s booked time slot.
  • Contact the customer before arrival if you are going to reach them early.
  • Call the store or centre if you are running 30 minutes or more behind schedule.

Requirements

  • Ability to build positive working relationships and contribute to a strong team atmosphere.
  • A warm, polite, and customer-focused approach in every interaction.
  • Willingness to adapt quickly to changing customer needs and store priorities.
  • Energy, drive, and a practical attitude toward balancing work and personal life.
  • Confidence in sharing ideas with managers and colleagues to improve the customer experience.
  • A full UK, EU, or EEA driving licence, including automatic-only licences, held for at least 12 months.
  • No more than 3 penalty points on the driving licence.
  • Ability to comply with GB Domestic Driving Rules.

Benefits

  • Paid holiday starting at 20 days plus a personal day, increasing to 22 days after 12 months, in addition to bank holidays.
  • Flexible working requests available from day one.
  • Discounts of 10% and 15% on pay-day weekends, with savings of up to £2,000 a year through the Colleague Clubcard, plus an extra card for sharing with family outside the home.
  • Free wellbeing services covering support for mind, body, and life.
  • Life cover worth five times pay and a pension scheme with matching contributions up to 7.5%.
  • A range of flexible benefits, including discounts, shares, and cycle-to-work schemes.
  • Uniform provided along with policies designed to support colleagues through important life moments.
  • Access to colleague networks that connect people from different backgrounds.

About the company

Its purpose is to serve customers, communities, and the planet a little better every day. It also places strong emphasis on diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessible recruitment, with a commitment to flexible working and support for colleagues at different life stages.

Additional information
