Job description

About the role

This position involves representing Tesco out on the road as a customer delivery driver. The job is more than transportation alone: it includes supporting shoppers at their homes, providing friendly service, and handling each delivery with care. The work is practical, active, and varied, with no two shifts exactly alike. While you will work independently for much of the day, support is always available from managers and colleagues at base.

Working pattern and availability

The availability window for this role is:

  • Monday: 08:00 to 17:00
  • Wednesday: 18:00 to 23:00
  • Friday: 13:30 to 23:00
  • Saturday: 18:00 to 23:00

Contracted hours are scheduled within these times, and shifts will be confirmed with 3 weeks’ notice. Tesco is open to applicants whose availability is close to, but not exactly aligned with, the stated times. New colleagues are normally offered a minimum of 16 guaranteed hours per week, though there are also opportunities for people seeking fewer hours, down to a minimum of 12.

Pay and additional pay

The hourly pay starts at £14.18. For stores within the M25, the starting rate increases to £15.45 per hour. Depending on the location, extra payments may also be available.

Role overview

The role focuses on delivering customer shopping orders accurately and on time, while keeping the van, trays, and delivery process clean, safe, and organised. You will deal directly with customers, explain order changes where needed, and provide refunds for items they are not satisfied with.

Responsibilities

  • Keep the delivery van and trays clean, tidy, and well organised.
  • Ensure the back yard is left clean and free of rubbish, including picking up litter when noticed.
  • Complete tray washing as part of the standard tray wash process.
  • Load the van when required and check that it is roadworthy before departure.
  • Discuss any order changes with customers, including missing items and substitutions, and handle refunds where appropriate.
  • Treat products and deliveries with the same care as personal belongings.
  • Reassure customers that substitutions will not be charged at a higher amount.
  • Deliver orders within the customer’s allocated time slot.
  • Call the customer if arriving early.
  • Contact the store or centre if running 30 minutes or more behind schedule.

Requirements

  • Ability to build positive working relationships and contribute to strong team spirit.
  • A friendly, respectful approach with both customers and colleagues.
  • Willingness to adapt quickly to changing customer needs and store priorities.
  • Energy and motivation to go beyond expectations while balancing work and personal life.
  • Confidence in sharing improvement ideas with managers and teammates.
  • A full or automatic UK, EU, or EEA driving licence held for at least 12 months.
  • No more than 3 penalty points on the driving licence.
  • Ability to follow GB Domestic Driving Rules.

Benefits

  • Holiday allowance starting at 20 days plus a personal day, increasing to 22 days after 12 months, in addition to bank holidays.
  • Flexible working requests available from day one.
  • Colleague Clubcard savings of 10% and 15% on pay-day weekends, with potential savings of up to £2,000 per year, plus an additional card for family outside your home.
  • Access to free wellbeing services covering mental, physical, and general life support.
  • Life cover worth five times pay and a pension scheme with matched contributions up to 7.5%.
  • A range of optional benefits such as discounts, shares, and cycle-to-work schemes.
  • Uniform provided, along with workplace policies that support important life moments.
  • Access to colleague networks that offer connection and support across different backgrounds.
