Role overview
This position is responsible for keeping a warehouse facility tidy, orderly, and safe. The custodian handles routine cleaning, manages waste, and helps maintain compliance with health and safety expectations. The job calls for close attention to detail and the ability to carry out physical work efficiently.
Key responsibilities
- Keep warehouse floors clean by sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming as needed.
- Regularly sanitize restrooms, break areas, and office spaces.
- Dust and wipe surfaces and equipment to support a clean working environment.
- Gather garbage and recyclable materials and dispose of them according to local requirements.
- Empty, maintain, and replace trash and recycling containers on schedule.
- Follow workplace health and safety procedures at all times.
- Escalate safety concerns, equipment damage, and maintenance issues to the appropriate leader.
- Track cleaning supply levels and restock items when needed.
- Store cleaning tools and materials neatly in designated locations.
- Help prepare and clean up for warehouse meetings or events.
- Carry out minor maintenance or repair tasks when required.
- Meet standards for speed, accuracy, and quality in daily work.
- Help keep the work area organized and hazard-free by reporting issues promptly.
- Collaborate with teammates and leadership to support daily, weekly, and monthly departmental targets.
- Follow company and warehouse policies consistently.
- Take on other duties or move between functions as needed to support operations.
Physical demands
- Work may require standing and/or walking for up to 12 hours per day.
- Must be able to communicate clearly through speech, vision, and hearing.
- Frequent use of hands for grasping and fine motor tasks is required.
- Regular bending, squatting, crawling, climbing, and reaching are part of the role.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull medium loads up to 75 lbs is needed.
Experience and education
At least 1 year of experience in a distribution setting is preferred, though it is not mandatory. A high school diploma or GED, or an equivalent mix of education and work experience, is acceptable. A college degree is not required.
Skills and personal qualities
Strong verbal and written communication, the ability to juggle several tasks and deadlines in a busy environment, and flexibility when priorities change are important. The role also benefits from tact, emotional intelligence, and a customer-focused mindset with a desire to go beyond expectations.
Work environment
The job involves regular exposure to moving machinery and vehicles. At times, the work area may experience changes in temperature or humidity, and there may be dust, fumes, and gases. Noise levels are generally moderate, and employee traffic through the area is average.
