Organization Overview
Central Okanagan Public Schools is situated within the unceded Traditional Territory of the Okanagan syilx peoples, serving over 25,000 students including approximately 3,200 who self-identify as First Nations, Metis, and/or Inuit ancestry. The district includes 50 school sites across Peachland, West Kelowna, Kelowna, and Lake Country, with a broad spectrum of educational institutions from elementary to secondary, learning centers, an alternate education school, and an online learning platform (K-12). Role Summary
We are seeking Custodians responsible for maintaining cleanliness, safety, and upkeep of school buildings and facilities. This role encompasses tasks like cleaning, waxing floors, managing heating and lighting systems, assisting school staff with locking/unlocking rooms, moving furniture and equipment, and supporting the recycling program. Custodians should be familiar with modern custodial practices, materials, equipment, and safety protocols, including emergency response procedures.
Work Conditions
This is a casual, on-call position with opportunities for full-time employment. Typical work hours are primarily from 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM, Monday through Friday, though occasional day shifts or weekend work may be required.
Candidate Requirements
- Minimum education of Grade 10 completion.
- Completion of the Building Service Worker (BSW) course or equivalent training.
- Preferably a minimum of two years’ experience applying modern custodial methods.
- Physical fitness to perform essential job duties.
- Ability to comprehend English instructions, both oral and written.
- Strong interpersonal and professional communication skills.
- Capability to work independently and collaborate as part of a team.
- Successful completion of a criminal record check.
Compensation and Benefits
The hourly wage for custodians is $26.74. Casual custodians receive additional compensation equivalent to 5% of bi-weekly earnings for vacation and 5% in each pay period for statutory holidays. Upon successful probation and receiving seniority, casual custodians qualify for an additional 10% compensation in lieu of benefits.
