Overview
The Custodian role at Alcorn Central High School involves maintaining cleanliness and basic upkeep of school facilities under guidance from school leadership and facilities oversight personnel. The position supports a safe, hygienic, and orderly environment for students, staff, visitors, and others by performing a variety of custodial and maintenance tasks throughout the buildings and grounds.
Key Responsibilities
- Secure the building at the start and end of shifts, ensuring safety and proper condition.
- Clean classrooms, hallways, cafeterias, restrooms, offices, stairways, and other interior areas according to district standards.
- Sweep, mop, wax, buff, and strip floors to maintain polished surfaces.
- Maintain carpets, rugs, upholstered furniture, and window blinds in a clean state.
- Wash and clean walls, ceilings, woodwork, windows, doors, and sills.
- Remove graffiti and clean glass surfaces promptly.
- Replace light bulbs as needed.
- Arrange and dismantle furniture and equipment for meetings and events.
- Clear snow and ice from entrances and walkways; apply sand and de-icing chemicals.
- Perform groundskeeping duties including debris removal and landscape upkeep.
- Receive deliveries, assist unloading trucks, and organize supplies in storage areas.
- Distribute supplies and materials to classrooms, bathrooms, and other building areas.
- Empty wastebaskets, collect trash, and support recycling initiatives.
- Undertake additional cleaning and maintenance tasks especially during school breaks.
- Assist visitors, parents, and guests during special school events and activities.
- Complete other related responsibilities as assigned.
Equipment Usage and Safety
Utilization of custodial equipment includes manual tools and powered machines such as brooms, mops, floor buffers, vacuum cleaners, snow blowers, shovels, and power mowers. The custodian must adhere to all safety regulations governing these tools, including the use of personal protective gear like masks, and must comply with the school district’s chemical hygiene and MSDS guidelines.
Travel
Some travel may be required occasionally between different schools and the central office.
Knowledge and Skills
- Follow oral and written instructions accurately and coordinate tasks with school leaders and supervisors.
- Fluent English communication skills for reading, writing, and speaking.
- Communicate clearly any cleaning, maintenance, or repair issues verbally or in writing.
- Maintain cooperative relationships with students, staff, and visitors.
- Basic arithmetic skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
- Ability to work outdoors in weather conditions such as heat, cold, rain, and snow.
- Capability to perform tasks above ground level using ladders or lifts.
- Adhere to scheduling and procedural guidelines as set by supervisors.
