Job Overview
Lyon County is looking for a full-time Custodian/Janitor to maintain the cleanliness and upkeep of county buildings. This role reports to the facilities manager and involves skilled and semi-skilled custodial tasks performed indoors and outdoors to ensure a healthy and orderly work environment. The position is non-exempt and offers benefits including health, dental, vision insurance and paid time off. The starting wage is $15.25 per hour.
Key Responsibilities

- Demonstrate reliability by showing up consistently as scheduled and fulfilling all job duties responsibly.
- Sweep, mop, scrub, and vacuum hallways, stairs, offices, and other areas.
- Strip and refinish floors at all levels and clean carpets as needed.
- Secure and open the facility on schedule.
- Clean glass doors, windows, blinds, window casings, stair railings, and wood fixtures.
- Disinfect restrooms, drinking fountains, furniture, fixtures, baseboards, and ledges.
- Empty waste into designated containers for collection.
- Notify supervisor of any maintenance needs identified during work.
- Monitor inventory and request custodial supplies to maintain sufficient stock.
- Adhere to safety protocols and maintain a clean, safe environment.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Possession of a current Class C driver's license is mandatory.
- One to two years of relevant experience in custodial or janitorial work is preferred but not a requirement.
- Ongoing participation in training related to custodial duties is expected.
- Ability to understand and follow both verbal and written instructions accurately.
- Proficiency in English is required; knowledge of a second language is advantageous.
- Capability to interpret technical manuals related to building maintenance.
- Basic skills in writing reports and responding to facility work orders.
- Mathematical skills including fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions applied to practical situations.
- Strong problem-solving skills including data collection, fact finding, and conclusion drawing.
- Effective communication skills for interacting with the public and other government offices, both written and spoken.
- Able to work both indoors and outdoors under varying weather conditions.
- Physical capability to frequently stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, lift up to 25 pounds regularly, and occasionally more.
Physical and Work Conditions
Work involves exposure to moderate to extreme conditions both inside and outside buildings, requiring physical endurance and agility.
