Job description
Role Overview
This position is a full-performance custodial role supporting county buildings on one of three shifts. The work is routine in nature and involves keeping facilities clean, orderly, and safe, including moving furniture and supplies, removing debris, and checking lighting and other building conditions for repair needs.
Reporting Structure
The custodian reports directly to the Custodial Superintendent and does not manage other employees or oversee a team.
Key Duties
- Carry out general cleaning tasks such as sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, waxing floors, and cleaning bathroom fixtures and surfaces.
- Clean windows as needed.
- Monitor restroom paper goods and replenish supplies when necessary.
- Inspect water cooler bottles and replace them when required.
- Empty trash containers and install new liners in county buildings and offices.
- Apply salt and clear snow from walkways during winter conditions.
- Remove debris from exterior drains.
- Move, assemble, and remove furniture, bookshelves, chairs, and tables as requested.
- Unload delivery trucks and move supplies to the receiving office.
- Inspect assigned areas for maintenance concerns and pass more complex issues to a supervisor.
Qualifications
A high school diploma or GED is required. Candidates should have a basic understanding of custodial methods and be able to read cleaning-product instructions, safety guidance, and equipment directions. The role also requires the ability to learn assigned tools and products quickly, follow verbal and written instructions, maintain simple records, and communicate politely with coworkers, county staff, contractors, and the public. Heavy manual labor is part of the job, and the employee must be able to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English.
Tools and Equipment
This role uses floor buffers, steam cleaners, carpet cleaners, washers, vacuums, mops, brooms, and dusting equipment.
Physical Requirements
The job regularly requires reaching with arms and hands, and frequently involves standing, walking, and using hands to handle tools or controls. Sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and talking or hearing may be required occasionally. The position involves frequent lifting or moving of up to 25 pounds and occasional lifting or moving of more than 100 pounds. Close vision and the ability to adjust focus are necessary. Reasonable accommodation may be available for qualified individuals with disabilities.
Work Environment
The work environment may include proximity to moving mechanical parts, elevated areas, damp or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic chemicals, and occasional risk of electrical shock. Indoor night-shift operations are generally quiet.
