Role overview

This remote contractor position is for a Cultural Studies Quality Assurance Lead focused on art history, visual culture, cultural studies, and wider humanities AI training work. The role centers on checking the quality and consistency of AI-generated content and reviewer output, making sure all work aligns with project rubrics, factual standards, and client expectations.

You will provide detailed written feedback, monitor recurring quality problems, help keep contributors aligned, and support onboarding and documentation for remote expert teams. The work requires strong subject-matter knowledge, clear English communication, careful attention to detail, and the ability to manage quality processes in a fast-paced distributed environment.

This company is a rapidly growing AI data services organization that supplies training data to major AI companies and foundation-model labs. In this role, your humanities expertise will help improve AI systems by ensuring outputs are historically grounded, visually informed, culturally sensitive, and clearly explained.

This position is hourly and remote. There is not an active project immediately available, but qualified candidates may be contacted first when suitable opportunities come up and may also gain access to future projects through the expert network.

Requirements

• A bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD in Art History, Cultural Studies, Visual Culture, Museum Studies, Humanities, Fine Arts, Comparative Literature, Media Studies, Anthropology, History, or a closely related discipline.
• Strong command of English for reading instructions, coordinating with teams, and delivering precise written feedback.
• At least 3 years of experience in art-historical research, cultural analysis, museum or curatorial work, teaching, academic writing, visual analysis, editing, cultural criticism, or a similar humanities-related workflow.
• Solid knowledge of art-historical methods, visual analysis, iconography, style, periodization, patronage, materials, museum ethics, cultural theory, representation, and historical context.
• Ability to assess content against detailed rubrics and identify problems such as incorrect attribution, weak visual analysis, poor periodization, stereotyping, unsupported interpretation, outdated terminology, or claims that lack context.
• Familiarity with topics such as ancient, medieval, Renaissance, modern, and contemporary art, as well as non-Western art histories, photography, film and media, visual culture, postcolonial theory, gender studies, museum studies, or heritage studies is preferred.
• Prior experience guiding or supporting remote researchers, writers, reviewers, educators, curators, annotators, or QAs is strongly preferred.
• Comfort using collaboration and tracking tools such as Discord, Google Sheets, Google Docs, dashboards, trackers, and project management systems.
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to maintain style guides, FAQs, trackers, onboarding content, calibration tasks, and documentation.
• Experience with AI training, data annotation, LLM evaluation, humanities QA, cultural sensitivity review, image or content review, or rubric-based evaluation is a strong advantage.

Responsibilities

• Monitor quality by reviewing art history and cultural studies items, spotting issues, sharing feedback, and escalating recurring or serious problems.
• Review AI-generated explanations, visual analyses, cultural comparisons, museum-style descriptions, critical interpretations, and context summaries for accuracy and nuance.
• Keep trainers and QAs updated through Discord on guideline changes, workflow adjustments, quality expectations, and review standards.
• Answer questions from trainers and QAs clearly and quickly, especially on visual analysis, attribution, periodization, cultural context, interpretive claims, ethics, and rubric use.
• Manage contributor activation by following up with inactive team members, encouraging participation, tracking responses, and flagging availability concerns.
• Build and maintain project documentation such as style guides, trackers, FAQs, quality notes, examples, honeypots, calibration tasks, and onboarding materials.
• Plan and conduct onboarding or training calls to explain project goals, workflows, rubrics, quality standards, and review expectations.
• Make sure trainers and QAs apply review guidelines consistently and understand updates as projects change.
• Flag culturally insensitive, Eurocentric, decontextualized, stereotyped, misattributed, or unsupported statements about art, culture, artists, or communities.
• Identify repeated quality issues, suggest workflow improvements, and help create scalable QA processes for humanities-focused AI training work.
