Job Overview
Under the supervision of a Crime Analyst 2, the role involves examining various data sources to support crime analysis activities. The analyst prepares detailed reports that document research processes and analytical tools utilized during investigations.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor, gather, and analyze open-source data, raw crime-related information, and intelligence using multiple analytical methods and tools.
- Conduct evaluation and correlation of crime and intelligence data to assess reliability, accuracy, and integrity while identifying patterns and trends from diverse information.
- Collaborate as part of a team providing investigative support for ongoing criminal inquiries.
- Adhere strictly to procedures for handling sensitive law enforcement data.
- Utilize software tools to interpret data that supports law enforcement investigations.
- Test and validate computer hardware, software, and analytical instruments following established guidelines.
- Collect, disseminate, and appropriately share crime and intelligence data resources.
- Perform peer reviews of analysis completed by fellow Crime Analysts.
- Develop descriptive intelligence reports employing analytical techniques to document research and support investigations.
- Act as a liaison with internal and external parties offering analytical assistance as needed.
- Respond to significant criminal investigations by providing information-sharing support across federal, state, local, and tribal agencies.
- Present oral and written briefings on criminal threat environments and related topics.
- Organize and maintain sensitive and open-source case files and databases.
- Testify in court proceedings when required.
- Conduct research using computer hardware, software, and electronic sources to gather information advancing investigative efforts.
- Stay current with best practices through seminars, courses, and professional meetings in intelligence and crime analysis fields.
- Attend conferences, training, and seminars to enhance professional knowledge.
Required Qualifications
- Crime Analyst 1 (SG-18): Minimum six years of crime analysis or closely related experience including strategic, tactical, and administrative analyses such as resource allocation, crime mapping, pattern detection, or trend assessment, or experience handling law enforcement data interpretation.
- Crime Analyst Trainee 2: At least five years of similar crime analysis experience as described above.
- Crime Analyst Trainee 1: Minimum four years of related experience with similar areas of focus.
- Substitutions allowed: An associate degree equals two years of experience; a bachelor's degree equals four years; a master's or higher degree adds one year; a crime analysis or GIS certificate substitutes for one year of experience.
