Role overview
The Public Defence Service in Christchurch is seeking a Court Registry Officer for an eight-month fixed term. In this position, you will support the day-to-day functioning of the court, working with a team to keep operations running smoothly and coordinating with judiciary members, lawyers, and court users.
What you will do
- Maintain case records so files remain accurate, current, and well managed, with a strong emphasis on data entry and sound judgment.
- Support court operations by opening court sessions in both English and Te Reo Māori, assisting the judiciary in the courtroom and chambers, and handling general court administration.
- Provide customer service on court-related matters through in-person, phone, and email communication.

Applicants should be committed to delivering a high-accuracy, professional service and be comfortable working with a wide range of people and situations. This role can suit candidates from varied backgrounds, including those interested in the justice system, people returning to work, or individuals who enjoy customer-focused roles.
- Ability to stay composed and resilient when dealing with sensitive matters, busy periods, and fast-moving work.
- Strong attention to detail and careful observation to ensure court information and processes are correct.
- Self-awareness and maturity when working with different customer needs and situations.
- Capability to manage several tasks at once and shift quickly between competing priorities.
- Willingness to learn and adapt as legislation, procedures, and feedback change over time.
- Clear communication skills, sound English, and confident Te Reo Māori pronunciation.
- Comfort using audio-visual equipment is an advantage.

Salary
The pay band for this position is NZD 60,729 to NZD 80,794 pro rata, with the final offer depending on skills and experience.
