Role overview
The Municipal Court is hiring a Court Administrator to oversee day-to-day court operations, supervise staff, and support the administration of criminal proceedings and docket management. This is a regular full-time, exempt role that reports to the Municipal Judge and is considered an at-will position serving at the pleasure of the Court.
Working schedule and location
Work is based at the Municipal Court in Farmington, NM. The position follows a Monday through Friday schedule, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Attendance at work is an essential part of the role.
Compensation and vacancy details
The hiring range is $25.0222 to $38.9296 per hour. There is 1 opening for this position. Pay grade is L.
Key duties
The Court Administrator handles a mix of supervisory, administrative, and clerical responsibilities for the Municipal Court. This includes planning and directing court operations, staffing, budgeting, records administration, docketing, and coordination with justice system stakeholders.
The role also involves supervising court personnel across permanent, temporary, and part-time positions; training and evaluating staff; managing fines and other court receipts; preparing reports; maintaining calendars and hearing schedules; and supporting subpoenas, summons, notices, and discovery-related work.
In addition, the position responds to public concerns about court procedures and works closely with judges, prosecutors, police, defense counsel, jail staff, and related agencies to keep court processes moving smoothly.
Qualifications
Applicants should have a high school diploma or GED, along with coursework in typing and/or general office practices. A minimum of 4 years of experience in secretarial, clerical, paralegal, or administrative work is required, including at least 2 years in a court setting, unless an equivalent mix of education and experience is available.
The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of judicial language and procedures, municipal court processes, criminal/traffic/infraction procedures, office administration, basic bookkeeping, and records management. The role also calls for experience supervising staff, accuracy in recordkeeping, comfort with court-related software and office equipment, and the ability to communicate effectively with the public and build positive working relationships.
Additional conditions
This position is covered by the City of Farmington's Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace Program. That may include pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return-to-duty, and follow-up testing.
Physical and work environment
The job is primarily performed in a normal office environment with a generally quiet noise level. The employee must be able to sit, talk, and hear frequently, and may occasionally need to walk, use hands and arms, and handle tools or controls. Lifting or moving up to 25 pounds may be required, and close vision with the ability to adjust focus is necessary.
