About the Role
The City of Farmington Hills is looking for upbeat, dependable people to support its Unplugged Summer Camps as Nature Camp Instructors/Counselors. In this position, you will help create a safe, engaging, and memorable experience for children and teens through outdoor activities, camper support, and active supervision. A key part of the role is participating in swimming activities alongside campers, while helping build a positive and inclusive camp atmosphere.
This opportunity is well suited to someone who enjoys working with young people, spending time outdoors, and contributing to a fun summer program.
Pay and Schedule
- Pay can reach up to $800 per week, with the possibility of higher earnings in specialty camps.
- Many roles begin at $14 per hour or above.
- Staff may also be eligible for referral bonuses, commitment rewards, and a summer incentives program.
- Schedules are consistent, and camp staff typically have summer evenings and weekends off.
- The role requires 35+ hours per week, Monday through Friday, from June to August 2026.
Key Duties
- Keep campers safe and supported at all times.
- Watch campers during activities, mealtimes, and unstructured time.
- Help enforce camp expectations and maintain a welcoming environment.
- Support planning and delivery of age-appropriate games, crafts, and team-building activities.
- Encourage campers to join discussions and take part in activities.
- Spend the full day outdoors with campers and help lead nature-based games, hikes, and other outdoor experiences.
- Work closely with other counselors and staff to keep the daily schedule running smoothly.
- Attend staff meetings and training sessions as needed.
- Build positive connections with campers and support teamwork and inclusion.
- Communicate clearly with campers, parents, and coworkers.
- Share incidents, concerns, and notable achievements with camp leadership without delay.
Qualifications
- A high school diploma is preferred, though it is not mandatory.
- Prior experience working with children in a camp or recreation setting is preferred.
- Interest in nature and outdoor activities is important.
- CPR and First Aid certification is preferred, or you must be willing to earn it before camp begins.
- You should bring a positive attitude, patience, and a genuine interest in camper growth and well-being.
- Strong communication and interpersonal abilities are needed.
- You should be comfortable adjusting to changing situations and solving problems effectively.
Physical Requirements
This position involves standing, sitting, kneeling, walking, talking, seeing, hearing, and using your hands and fingers to reach and handle objects. The job may require lifting or moving up to 50 pounds, and you must be able to work outdoors for long periods in different weather conditions.
