Job description

About Thiess

Thiess began in Australia in 1933 and has since developed into a worldwide provider of sustainable mining services and resource solutions, supported by more than 15,000 employees across multiple continents. The business delivers mining services, land rehabilitation, and engineering capability that contribute to the future of the resources sector while generating long-term value for clients, communities, and employees.

Joining Thiess means becoming part of a group that is helping redefine sustainable mining for future generations. North America is central to the company’s growth plans, with work underway across the United States and Canada and further expansion into new markets. Across locations such as Salt Lake City, the Intermountain West, Sudbury, and Northern Ontario, teams are tackling complex challenges, embracing innovation, and creating careers with meaningful impact.

The company is seeking individuals who want purposeful work, the chance to develop within a global organization, and an opportunity to help shape the future of mining and resource solutions.

Role Overview

Thiess is hiring an accomplished and commercially focused Country Director - Canada to lead and expand its Canadian operations. This senior leadership position, based in Sudbury or Toronto, will own strategic growth, client relationships, and the ongoing development of Thiess’ footprint in Canada. The role will initially concentrate on winning new business and will gradually add operational accountability as project volume increases.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set and steer the Canada growth strategy with an emphasis on value creation for clients.
  • Provide senior leadership across several projects and business initiatives in the region.
  • Work in close partnership with New Work and executive teams to uncover and pursue expansion opportunities.
  • Develop and sustain strong connections with clients, industry stakeholders, and key mining-sector partners.
  • Improve operational outcomes that are safe, efficient, cost-conscious, and aligned with commercial and contractual goals.
  • Manage operational planning, resource deployment, and performance tracking to keep delivery on target.
  • Promote a strong safety culture through visible leadership and a clear commitment to the wellbeing of employees, contractors, and partners.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate brings executive leadership experience, preferably in mining, although heavy industrial operations may also be considered. Success in leading dispersed teams, handling complex operations, and managing large-scale business priorities is important.

You should have a strong background in operational leadership, project execution, and commercial management, along with a solid understanding of mining operations and planning. Experience in both open pit and underground settings is preferred.

The role calls for someone who has expanded business into new international markets, understands financial and contractual matters, and can identify growth opportunities with an entrepreneurial mindset.

Additional strengths include portfolio optimisation, asset evaluation, cost control, financial accounting, mine planning, team development, succession planning, and the ability to lead high-pressure negotiations involving pricing, volumes, risk allocation, and long-term agreements.

The successful applicant must be comfortable representing the company at senior industry, investor, and government forums to support commercial goals.

Applicants must be authorised to work in Canada without sponsorship. English fluency is required, and French capability will be considered an advantage.

Education

A bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering, Engineering, Business, or a related field is preferred. PMP or a similar project leadership qualification will be viewed favourably.

What We Offer

  • A workplace culture grounded in safety, integrity, accountability, collaboration, and innovation.
  • Competitive executive compensation with annual incentive potential.
  • Comprehensive health and retirement coverage.
  • Opportunities to progress across Canada and internationally.
  • The chance to influence the future of mining in North America.

Compensation
