Job description

About the Company

Blount Fine Foods is a family-run food manufacturer, marketer, and product developer with a five-generation history of bringing premium prepared foods to market. The company creates restaurant-style items for retail grocery, hot bars, and restaurant channels, including single-serve grab-and-go soups, mac and cheese, entrées, and specialty products such as organic, gluten-free, and low-sodium options.

Role Overview

The Corporate Counsel will be a key member of the organization, providing practical legal support to a growing fresh-food business and its subsidiary companies. This position is designed for someone who can work closely with business teams, offer commercial judgment, and help balance growth with risk management and compliance. The role supports a broad range of functions, including Sales & Marketing, Operations, Supply Chain, Food Safety & Quality, Regulatory, Human Resources, Finance, and other corporate teams.

The attorney will also assist with mergers and acquisitions, real estate matters, and a wide range of day-to-day issues that arise in a fast-moving food company.

Business and Legal Advisory

  • Serve as an accessible, business-minded legal partner involved in everyday decision-making across the company.
  • Advise leaders on contracts, compliance, risk matters, employment issues, and general corporate concerns using practical, solution-oriented judgment.
  • Deliver concise, balanced guidance that supports both business goals and sound risk management.

Employment Law and Compliance

  • Support Human Resources on employee relations, investigations, policy questions, separations, leaves, accommodations, wage and hour matters, workers’ compensation, and workforce compliance.
  • Provide guidance on employment law requirements at the federal, state, and local levels across the company’s operating sites.
  • Help ensure compliance in manufacturing settings, including meal-break practices, pay practices, and workforce communications.
  • Track legal and regulatory changes and assess how they affect the business.

Contracts and Commercial Support

  • Prepare, review, negotiate, and manage agreements such as vendor, supplier, service, confidentiality, licensing, and technology contracts.
  • Support Sales and Marketing on commercial arrangements, including customer supply agreements, private label programs, pricing terms, promotions, rebates, chargebacks, and broker/distributor relationships as needed.
  • Review advertising, marketing claims, customer-facing communications, and branded content in coordination with internal stakeholders.
  • Work with Procurement, Operations, IT, Food Safety, and Commercial teams to reduce legal and business risk.
  • Help maintain standard contract templates and playbooks to improve consistency and efficiency.

Risk Management and Litigation Support

  • Assist with claims, disputes, and litigation in partnership with external counsel.
  • Support investigations, document review, discovery, and regulatory inquiries.
  • Contribute to enterprise risk management efforts and internal controls.
  • Handle regulatory matters across a range of agencies and topics, including EPA, DEM, FDA, USDA, and others.
  • Coordinate with outside counsel where needed to ensure practical and cost-effective representation.

Policy, Training, and Governance

  • Draft and update company policies, procedures, and internal guidance with support from HR, Operations, and other stakeholders.
  • Occasionally deliver training for managers and leaders on legal, compliance, and risk topics.
  • Maintain a strong standard of ethics, confidentiality, integrity, and discretion.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
  • Active authorization to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction; Rhode Island and/or Massachusetts is preferred.
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant legal experience, ideally including a mix of in-house and law firm work.
  • Strong ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
  • Proven ability to build relationships and influence people across functions and organizational levels, including leadership and frontline teams in sales, marketing, supply chain, and manufacturing.

Total Compensation and Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • 401(k) plan with company match.
  • Paid time off, including vacation, sick time, and holidays.
  • Education assistance program.
  • Life insurance and short-term disability coverage.
  • Employee discounts on Blount products at the company retail location.
  • Discretionary annual bonus program.
