Job description

Role overview

This position supports the College of Business at Austin Peay State University by strengthening academic advising, student recruitment, and retention outcomes for undergraduate students. It is a senior-level advising role that works closely with the Student Success Director, guides the advising team, helps lead outreach and retention efforts, and supervises selected staff and student employees. The main goal is to build student success systems that help learners progress academically and professionally.

Academic advising leadership

  • Offer direction, coaching, and day-to-day support to the College of Business advising team.
  • Help shape and implement advising practices that better serve undergraduate students.
  • Act as a senior advisor for students facing more complex academic planning or decision-related needs.

Recruitment and retention coordination

  • Take a leading role in undergraduate recruitment and retention work in partnership with faculty, staff, and administrators.
  • Represent the College of Business at APSU Preview Days, recruitment events, high school visits, and related outreach activities.
  • Collaborate with the College of Business Recruitment and Retention Committee to design practical strategies for attracting and keeping students.

Program development and assessment

  • Plan, coordinate, and carry out recruitment and retention programs designed for the college’s varied student population.
  • Review data from student recruitment and retention efforts and use it to suggest improvements.
  • Develop creative approaches that improve the student experience, support enrollment growth, and strengthen retention.

Student engagement and advocacy

  • Act as a dependable support person for students and help maintain an inclusive, welcoming environment.
  • Work with faculty and college leadership to represent and support student needs.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities

The ideal candidate should understand current academic advising practices, university and degree requirements, and be able to work effectively with students, families, campus partners, and the public. The role also calls for strong confidentiality, recordkeeping, organization, multitasking, collaboration, planning, and time-management skills. Proficiency with office and advising systems such as Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SungardHE Banner, and EAB Navigate is needed, along with clear verbal and written communication.

Required qualifications

  • A master’s degree or higher in Higher Education Administration, College Student Personnel, Counseling, or a closely related discipline.
  • At least two years of experience in higher education advising or student success work.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office, Outlook, and Zoom.
  • Successful completion of a background check.
  • Capacity to perform sedentary work, including lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling up to 10 pounds occasionally or exerting negligible force frequently or constantly.

This is a full-time, onsite role located in Clarksville, Tennessee. The position is focused on undergraduate student success within the College of Business.
