Job description
Overview
The Coordinator of Military-Affiliated Advising reports to the Director of Military-Affiliated Advising at Austin Peay State University in Tennessee. This pivotal position serves as the main academic advising contact for military-affiliated undergraduate students attending through the Austin Peay Center at Fort Campbell. It focuses on aiding student transition, success, and retention by combining proactive advising with comprehensive expertise in admissions, financial aid, military education benefits, and various university systems such as ArmyIgnitED.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver proactive academic advising tailored to military-affiliated students utilizing Appreciative Advising and individualized education plans.
- Guide students in selecting and managing degree plans, majors, and academic progress while collaborating with faculty and support services.
- Assist students facing academic challenges by connecting them to appropriate campus resources and developing retention strategies.
- Advise on and support the use of military-related education benefits including ArmyIgnitED, Tuition Assistance, VA, and MyCAA programs.
- Maintain and utilize university systems such as Slate, Banner, and DegreeWorks to track student progress and maintain accurate records.
- Support recruitment efforts through outreach events, admissions counseling, transcript reviews, and assisting with application processes to ensure smooth enrollments.
- Participate in onboarding, team operations, and continuous professional development activities to enhance team performance and student support.
- Stay up to date with university academic policies, military education guidelines, and relevant technology platforms.
- Engage in regular team meetings and contribute to a strong student-centered team culture.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution required; Master's in student affairs, counseling, education, or related fields preferred.
- Experience in higher education advising, admissions, or student support is preferred, especially with military-affiliated populations.
- Familiarity with military education benefits and systems like ArmyIgnitED, VA Benefits, and MyCAA.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Banner, AP OneStop, Slate, and DegreeWorks.
- Strong multitasking capabilities with excellent communication skills and the ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Understanding of FERPA and university academic policies.
Physical and Work Requirements
- Predominantly sedentary role with occasional movement between locations on- and off-site.
- Ability to lift items up to 10 pounds occasionally.
- Prolonged computer usage and phone communication required.
- Flexible working hours including some evenings and weekends.
