Job description
Role Overview
This contract position focuses on producing six principal illustrations for a children's picture book series targeting readers aged 6 to 10. These artworks will play a pivotal role in marketing strategies, including a Kickstarter campaign and a limited-edition print collection, with possible chances for continued work on the broader series. Completion of the artwork is segmented into three batches over roughly three weeks, culminating in a final deadline of August 14, 2026.
Artistic Style and Requirements
The preferred style embodies loose, hand-drawn pencil or ink outlines paired with a delicate watercolor wash, generating a cozy, storybook ambience with a slightly imperfect aesthetic. These illustrations should enhance the storytelling, conveying emotion in unison with the narrative. The use of either traditional or digital methods is accepted; however, any AI-generated or AI-assisted content is strictly forbidden. Candidates must submit a portfolio evidencing proficiency in children’s book illustrations, character creation, hand-drawn line art, and watercolor or wash techniques.
Deliverables
- Produce six main illustration pieces for a children's picture book, delivered incrementally in three batches.
- Submit all artwork by August 14, 2026.
- Ensure the artwork features loose, hand-drawn pencil or ink linework with a subtle watercolor wash.

- Maintain a warm, narrative-driven, and slightly imperfect storybook style without glossy or highly polished finishes.
- Collaborate closely with the author to synchronize illustrations with the storytelling and project vision.
- Deliver high-resolution digital files suitable for print and digital platforms.
Qualifications and Skills
- Demonstrable experience in children's book illustration with a strong, relevant portfolio.
- Skilled in hand-drawn linework and watercolor or wash techniques, either traditionally or digitally created.
- Adept at crafting expressive, storytelling illustrations that complement text.
- Strong character design abilities tailored for young audiences.
- Dedication to original work free from AI generation or assistance.
- Excellent time management and adherence to strict deadlines.
- Responsive and communicative throughout the project lifespan.
- Experience with artwork for marketing or publishing campaigns is advantageous.
