Job description
Position Overview
Concorde Education is seeking independent contract instructors to teach comic book creation enrichment programs for students across elementary, middle, and high school levels. These assignments take place on-site at partner schools and typically involve after-school sessions ranging from 1 to 4 instructional hours weekly over approximately 10 weeks.
Instruction Details
- Delivery Mode: In-person instruction at various school locations in Queens County, NY.
- Target Audience: K–12 students, with grade levels varying depending on assignment.
- Content Focus: Storytelling, character development, illustration, sequential art, panel design, and comic production techniques adjusted to the students' age and skill level.
- Program Duration and Schedule: Most engagements last about 10 weeks with classes after school spanning 1–4 hours each week.
- Start Dates: Opportunities arise throughout the academic year.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and execute engaging and age-appropriate comic book workshops.
- Introduce students to narrative structure, character creation, scripting, and visual storytelling techniques.
- Adapt teaching methods according to student ability, materials available, and site requirements.
- Foster creativity, collaboration, constructive critique, and confidence in students.
- Maintain a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment aligned with school policies.
- Communicate effectively with Concorde Education and school personnel regarding session progress and concerns.
- Complete required session reports and follow safety and administrative procedures at each site.
Qualifications and Skills
- Preferred minimum of 60 college credits for applicable assignments.
- Experience in illustration, comic arts, graphic storytelling, animation, creative writing, graphic design, or related arts disciplines.
- Background in teaching, tutoring, mentoring, or leading youth activities.
- Proficient communication, organizational, and classroom management skills.
- Availability matching the assignment schedule and prompt communication about any scheduling conflicts.
- Familiarity with both traditional and digital illustration tools.
Materials and Instructional Resources
Instructional supplies such as art materials, digital drawing tools, software, and curriculum guides may be provided by the schools, though instructors may also integrate their own approved materials consistent with copyright and site policies. All instructional content and projects must respect intellectual property laws and encourage original student work.
Compensation and Terms
Independent contractors receive payment typically exceeding $50 per completed instructional hour. Pay rates consider factors such as assignment complexity, prep time, location, and experience. Compensation is generally paid via direct deposit monthly after services are delivered. Contractors negotiate their rates during application, which may be accepted, countered, or declined based on assignment budgets.
