Conservator of Paintings

Role Overview

The Conservator will be responsible for evaluating, treating, and preserving paintings within the SAAM collection. This role also involves educating visitors about the significance and processes of conservation.

Key Duties

• Conduct detailed technical assessments on artworks to determine current condition, including identifying types and levels of degradation and necessary restorations.
• Undertake delicate restoration and conservation procedures on sensitive painting materials.
• Identify and monitor environmental and human factors that might pose risks to artworks, including climate conditions, lighting, and handling practices.
• Serve as an expert advisor for proper climate control, illumination, storage solutions, and artwork handling protocols.
• Engage with the public by providing information during conservation treatments and through educational outreach.
• Collaborate with external organizations to develop programs and educational activities related to art conservation.
• Create and demonstrate conservation techniques for interactive digital kiosks and online video content.

Employment Conditions

• Males born after December 31, 1959, must have Selective Service registration.

Qualification Requirements

Candidates qualify if they have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the Federal Service GS-09 level, which includes performing conservation of paintings, conducting assessments and documentation, applying treatment, environmental monitoring, as well as public engagement and program development.

Alternatively, three years of advanced graduate study (leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent) pertinent to the field may substitute for experience. A combination of education and experience can also meet qualification standards.

Resumes should be concise (maximum two pages) and clearly detailed to demonstrate relevant experience without duplicating the announcement's language. Both paid and volunteer experiences that build skills related to conservation will be considered.
