He angitūtanga: The opportunity
Auckland Council's Environmental Health Response team is seeking a dedicated Compliance Officer – Noise to join their group committed to enhancing community wellbeing. In this role, you will be responsible for addressing noise complaints, conducting proactive investigations, and educating Auckland residents on their rights and obligations. Your work will be crucial in maintaining Auckland as a safe, vibrant, and respectful city. This position offers a varied, people-centric, and impactful work experience.
Day-to-day responsibilities include:
- Responding promptly and accurately to noise complaints, ensuring adherence to statutory requirements, service level agreements (SLAs), and key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Conducting proactive investigations, implementing enforcement actions, and performing noise monitoring, including background and pre/post-consent assessments.
- Providing support to contracted Noise Control Officers and assisting with complex or recurring noise issues.
- Managing escalated cases, maintaining communication with all involved parties, and liaising with senior staff and specialists.
- Auditing the performance of contractors and contributing to the team's ongoing improvement initiatives.
- Participating in on-call duties and assisting other Environmental Health teams with low-risk public health inspections during less busy periods.
Please note: This role operates under standard business hours, with regular on-call duties, particularly on Friday evenings and weekends. These will be managed through flexible working arrangements.

The ideal candidate will possess experience in similar regulatory or compliance roles, with a solid grasp of investigative methodologies, relevant legislation, and customer-focused problem-solving. You should thrive in dynamic settings, communicate effectively, and handle challenging situations with professionalism and empathy. A strong commitment to continuous improvement, a collaborative approach, and the ability to balance enforcement with education are essential. Your approach should be calm, fair, and solutions-oriented, ensuring actions are proportionate and aligned with Council policies.
Specific experience sought includes:
- Conflict resolution, mediation, and negotiation within frontline regulatory environments.
- Application of legislation, assessment techniques, and sound problem-solving skills.
- Confident engagement with diverse communities and maintaining high customer service standards.
- Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
- Proficiency in computer skills, including the Windows environment, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Possession of a current New Zealand driver’s license.
- A minimum of two years of experience in a frontline regulatory enforcement setting.
- A certificate in environmental noise measurement and assessment, or a similar qualification, is preferred but not mandatory.
