Job description

Role overview

Whānau Āwhina Plunket is looking for a committed Community Services Team Leader to guide the Christchurch-based community services function. This is a permanent part-time role of 32 hours per week, worked from Tuesday to Friday. The position focuses on leading services that strengthen holistic whānau wellbeing and support stronger community connections.

The advertised salary band is NZD 67,999 to 79,999, with the final offer based on experience.

The opportunity

In this role, you will help shape services that respond to changing community needs while keeping delivery locally relevant and nationally aligned. You will be part of the Southern Leadership team and will lead a multi-disciplinary group responsible for community-focused programmes and support services.

Your team will include Community Service Co-ordinators, Playgroup Coordinators, Injury Prevention Coordinators, and Home Visiting Support Co-ordinators. You will take an operational approach to performance, contribute to risk management and reporting, and build strong working relationships across the community sector. Regional travel will be part of the role.

What you will bring

To succeed in this position, you will need proven leadership capability, including the ability to coach, encourage, and develop people. You should also bring strong communication skills, a collaborative working style, sound relationship-building ability, and a sharp eye for detail.

Additional requirements

  • A diploma or higher qualification in Community Services, Education, or Social Services, or substantial experience in community services, preferably in the NGO, health, or community sectors.
  • Practical understanding of volunteering, community development, and the pressures affecting priority communities.
  • Confidence in managing budgets, directing workplans, and delivering on agreed outcomes.
  • Cultural competence and the ability to support and advocate for Māori, Pasifika, Asian, and other communities in Aotearoa New Zealand.

What’s on offer

  • A range of wellbeing supports, including an annual wellbeing day.
  • Retail discounts and reduced childcare costs.
  • Flexible working options, including a mix of working from home and from the office.
  • Development opportunities that build cultural capability and help you contribute to the organisation’s mission.
  • Dedicated time and space for kaimahi Māori and other cultural communities, including regular national and regional gatherings.
  • Fitness Passport access with discounted membership options at local fitness facilities.
