About the Role
This position, located at NMS Unit 49 Kelvin Way Trading Estate, B70 3TP, is an operational role dedicated to directly supervising groups of offenders completing community sentences through unpaid work. Supervisors lead these teams in tasks such as clearing overgrowth, restoring community facilities, planting, litter picking, and graffiti removal to benefit the local community and help offenders pay back for their crimes.
Candidates must possess a full UK manual driving licence, as this is essential for operating service vehicles related to the role; automatic-only licences are not accepted.
Responsibilities
- Supervise and motivate groups of offenders for up to 7 hours a day on community projects.
- Drive service vehicles to transport offenders and equipment to work sites as required.
- Ensure all tasks are completed effectively and demonstrate correct procedures by example.
- Support People on Probation on their journey to rehabilitation, actively contributing to community betterment.
- May be required to work frequent weekends and some evenings, with weekend working compensated at a 50% higher rate.

The role accommodates individuals with caring responsibilities or other commitments, offering flexible working options across the seven-day week projects. The pace of work might sometimes disrupt standard rest breaks, but wellbeing is a priority and supported accordingly.
Salary and Career Progression
New hires start at a pay scale minimum of £28,064 per year, pro-rated for part-time hours. The Probation Service provides opportunities for annual pay increases linked to a Competency Based Framework that rewards growing competence. Pay bands are adjusted annually in line with Civil Service guidance.
Person Specification and Eligibility
- Empathetic, good interpersonal and communication skills, with leadership capability.
- Must hold a full UK manual driving licence.
- Right to work in the UK is essential; sponsorship is not available for new Skilled Worker visa holders from July 22, 2025.
- Subject to successful criminal record and baseline personnel security checks.
