Position Overview
The Community Ministry Worker supports the food service operations for The Salvation Army’s East Kootenay Circuit in Fernie, British Columbia. This role ensures compliance with the Canada Food Guide and maintains adherence to relevant health and safety regulations.
Responsibilities
- Assist in sorting and distributing food donations as part of food recovery efforts.
- Perform janitorial tasks such as dusting, sweeping, floor cleaning, and bathroom maintenance.
- Drive to collect food donations and deliver recycling and electronics when volunteers are unavailable.
- Receive and sort donations for Community Food Services or the Thrift Store.
- Welcome and support donors and guests by providing information about services or directing them to appropriate assistance.
- Monitor equipment condition, including logging refrigerator temperatures, and report repairs needed.
- Establish and maintain positive, transformative relationships with guests and donors in the facility.
- Provide programming support to the CFS Supervisor, Thrift Store Manager, volunteers, or staff.
- Assist with inventory management.
- Clean and sanitize dishes, produce bins, and pickup bins following food share events.
- Maintain and clean the coffee station area.
- Communicate with and guide guests toward services offered within The Salvation Army or the broader community.
- Maintain cleanliness and uphold health and safety standards to ensure client and volunteer safety in compliance with the OH&S Act, regulations, and organizational policies.
- Handle other related duties as assigned by supervisors.
- Assist in managing food bank materials, including donation flow and distribution.
- Manage gift cards with a value of up to $100.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
- This is a permanent full-time position working mainly onsite at a local elementary school.
- Physical demands include lifting or moving items weighing up to 80 pounds regularly.
- The role requires frequent reaching, bending, stooping, and standing for extended periods.
Reporting Structure
The Community Ministry Worker reports directly to the Community Food Services (CFS) Supervisor.
Qualifications and Experience
- Completion of secondary school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Valid Safe Food Handling Certification is mandatory.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license and a clean driver’s abstract.
- At least two years of relevant experience in related roles.

Compensation
The salary range for this position is from $18.25 to $22.23 per hour, with a maximum rate of $26.20. Placement on the pay scale depends on market conditions, internal equity, and candidate qualifications.
